It must have been absolutely terrible beyond words for your grandmother, but it would have been a situation replicated many hundreds of thousands of times for other families across this country and across Europe. I really do believe that WW1 was a vast tragedy of unimaginable proportions for Western Europe. It changed everything for millions. It led directly to revolution in Russia, and we know what happened in Germany in the years after, and what that ultimately led to. 

For this country at least (I know this would not be the case elsewhere) I do think WW1 was far more devastating and destructive than WW2; vast numbers of young men killed, equally huge numbers left maimed, disabled, broken and traumatised, huge social upheaval, millions of individual families suddenly bereaved, economy left in ruins - we are still seeing the consequences of that conflict playing out now in our day to day lives over a century later. I’m not sure it is possible to think of a more complete example of a Phyrric victory. 

None of that lessens the individual sacrifice of those who served in any way. It is right that they should be remembered.

Declaring early for 8/20 today please! I went out on Friday night and yesterday had friends around unexpectedly so drinks were partaken both nights, it was fun tho!

(In my best Richie Benaud voice) "Good morning, everyone!"

Well, that was a gig with a difference. You know there could be a problem when a drunk starts "dancing" during the first song.  She then repeatedly tried to talk to the singer mid song, climaxing her gobbiness by stumbling into the music stand and lights, tipping it all over and pouring her drink into the powered monitor! Not satisfied with that, "Can I have a go on the mic'?"  No.  Why do people do that?  OK so we're not at the O2 but we are being paid and so it's work for the evening. You wouldn't ask a plumber doing a job if you could "have a  go with yer wrench, mate?" while tipping tea everywhere! She later got "asked to leave" and did so.  Just to add to the "fun" one other customer passed out and along with copious vomiting, had to be carried out!  And you moan about an office! Meanwhile I polished off two pints of....




Soda and lime so it's 13/29 here and SwishyTail tomorrow. Yeah!

@RobM99 / @Season_of_Mist thank you for both posts; they should be remembered and the sacrifice should never be forgotten especially by those in positions of power.

I was saddened to read two articles one estimating over 100,000 Russian men having lost their lives many having been conscripted. Another regarding the political situation and propaganda machine in Russia over 100 years on from the atrocities of WW1. 

On a lighter note @RobM99 haha, fml, there's always one who takes it too far eh?

Re; WW1 if you watch Blackadder goes forth and extract the humour, it's quite realistic.
