@Grumpy_chap Tesla warranty is fine, but if you worry about Tesla plenty of other EVs to choose from.

All I can say is since taking ownership of my first EV back in 2015 I have zero interest in buying another combustion car every again, Tesla have upped the game by adding in software implementation no traditional manufacturers can dream about.

V11 is about to be released which will offer 'remote' viewing of dash footage the car collects in real time on your phone. Its a totally different ownership experience from any else.

A X5 isn't cheap, and with the amount you will spend on it over 4 years you can easily get into a number of different EVs which all will be cheaper to run.
  • Yes noted, on the used example. That's why these are useful post chats.
Is that your house as well or just the car electric?
I agree - having driven a lot of EV's, the racket from my 740d engine hum is astonishing. As is that laboured slow delay feeling.
Also... that X5 engine is not a V6 and so in time that will drone on too. Also it has air suspension!
But there is NO EV I would consider other than Tesla because none of them are really any good.
The Model X is a cooler car but a lot of dollar mate - you have to really love it - and I found it a bit loud on the road for me. Maybe I need to try one again. The seats and so on are extremely fun - that over X5 easy because its cool - but again I found it noisy.
I have had the following EV's and semi so far to give that statement context.
    1. E-Tron Audi - 1 Week - Not impressed - quieter than Model X
1a. Etron Coupe Audi - Half Day - Not as good as above.
    2. IPace Jaguar - 1 Week - Not impressed - quieter than Model X
    3. Model 3 - Full Day - Very Very impressed drives amazing - just not very posh thing to park up - it was red one with bad wheels!
    4. Model X - Test Run in 2017/8 - Really a lot of road noise. Rubbish Autonomy at the time. Terrible Stereo.
    5. Audi 55 TFSI E - No engine noise - Quiet.
    6. BMW 330e - What on earth is the point of that.
    7. BMW X5 40i 2 days - V V Impressed luxury
Also noted on the BMW X5 - BUT - most of them have a. A service pack b. a warranty ( the extension of which is £700 a year ) and again c. You can sell one any day of the week. I just feel it is immune even if the world was electric.
When we do go back to normal cars after the EV or even Hybrid Lexus - it really is such an eye opener.

Were these offered as extended test drives, or how did you get to use so many cars?
I was seriously considering a new car pre-lockdown and wanted to go EV.  At that time, dealers were saying they would sell a car only if I purchase "blind", which really put me off, so I stuck with the current car.
As things turned out, a new car was the last thing we needed with heavy hits to income plus no longer driving anywhere but that will change and I will still then be keen to go EV.
  • I was given a lift in a Model X and I was disappointed.  The switches felt quite cheap.  And I positively hate everything being on a touch screen.
  • Sort of work in a car delivery type capacity thing. Yes the X had Mercedes old parts but probably much better now. I think MB are a massive investor or something or they were.
  • Also just got my test drive confirmation for the M3 - no silly sales questions, “So when are u looking at changing, do you want to put a deposit on it before you set off, I mean we have someone else on it you see, how will you be financing the car, what are you driving now, are you looking to buy a car today or just test drive it, looked at many others, we are in the business of selling cars here you know, let me introduce you to Bob he’s going to sell you a really good financial product, PCP is the best way you know”

I chose my present car because I am not forced to use a touch screen while driving.  I see drivers being inattentive because they are going through the menus on their touchscreens.  With the old buttons you would have muscle memory to find the demister.  With 100% devotion to a touch screen, no matter how large going through menus while driving is downright dangerous in my view.  Why? Because you have to actually look at the screen to check you are selecting delisted, not changing track on the media player.

With my car I have a choice of track wheel or touch screen.  If stopped and parked up and I want to programme the satnav, I will use the touch screen.  If I need to make a suggested route change while driving, I can glimpse and use the track wheel.

Two very different vehicles in my view. What  do you really need the car for?
im what is considered a “late adopter” so the diesel X5 would be my choice all day long.

  • The previous two posters are correct about used EV's holding their value.
I don't understand why as I would not pay a bean for a used EV because the battery will be shot and a massive great big bill looming.
There are people that will, though.  I've seen a Renault Zoe listed at a local trader £9k and not even including the battery!  Quite absurd.
Tesla at the least, that nonsense about the battery being shot is laughable, statistically almost all Tesla batteries are holding over 90% of new capacity even after 4 years. It's sad to see misinformed people continuing to repeat the myths about batteries. Even at 90% capacity, that's hardly the end of the world, a 400 mile car range dropping to, checks notes, around 360 miles! OH NOES WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN
