  • South West - 26 bought with one of the 100% mortgages that put Northern Rock in the cart. Did well for us, just sold it with enough equity for a decent deposit on a house worth twice the value of the old one.

This year at 31 and in the South East. No help from mummy or daddy but did have some equity from husband's first purchase, which he bought in 2011 at 27. Wasn't enough for a proper deposit so I topped it up with my own savings.

3 Bed semi in Oxfordshire was £15,250 in 1979, aged 22. We had to BEG Anglia, Hastings and Thanet B/S for a £13,725 mortgage - all our own deposit.

Was 21, in 1991. Bought in SE3 with an ex for £65k. Seem to remember getting somewhere between £2-4k off my parents. Sold in 2005 for £58,500 after we'd split up.

First bought in Leeds in 2001 for £43k cash with no help.
Had to sell one year later due to a relationship break-up making no profit and have been renting ever since.

22 in 2003 - London commuter belt (30 miles out). 100% mortgage; no deposit; interest only for first three years; 4.5x my solo (not joint) salary. 5-bed terraced town house. (Yes, that was an amazing deal even then - one of the few perks of buying a house while still young enough to count for HSBC's graduate account and associated mortgage offer; student loans were still being paid off (for my specific generation, the loan was about 2k a year, and if you earnt enough was paid off in around 5 years))
  • 32 in 2014. Saved and gifted deposit from parents. Victorian mid-terrace. Bought for 199k and sold 6 years later for 330k
