But I think it was short sighted to go for politics and focus on fisheries than financial sector imo. Which is a drop in the ocean compared to the latter, forgive the pun.I think this article can explain why many in fishing communities saw our membership of the EU as an issue.I had relatives in the industry and saw first hand how it affected them. In many places also, for every boat employed you can reckon on a considerable number of additional jobs supported, from dockers in the ports, small fishmongers in the local towns, to processing, transport etc. Now, that is correct, just less than 50% of the fish landed in the UK is exported to the EU. However, in the 1970's through to the mid-1980's before the CFP, UK landings were around one million tons (including fresh and froxen, shellfish etc). landings have now declined to just over half that, and not all UK landings are by UK owned boats.Once quotas came in, UK received a smaller allocation, so smaller operatives were assigned smaller pieces of the pie, which became uneconomic, and they sold out to larger outfits, who were not inclined to give up any of what they got.If anyone is interested there is a feast of statistics here0 -
Now with the fishing red tape, alot of that catch will go to waste/ incur significant on costs, sadly and for what? To have a nominal say over sovereignty?
Who's going to buy our fish if they have to pay VAT on it, when they can get it without this cost elsewhere, In the EU? Not to mention the delays causing the stock to be not so fresh anymore due to the supplier having to go through a 71 page document."It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"
