The shock was Eurocarparts starting at £26.99 when I normally pay £10 for the air filter. Still £15 after discount.

If you don’t want to pay for Mann and have fallen out with Bosch, how about Mahle?
Never used them before. Are they OK?

So you are saying the main prices have gone up but you are still getting a “30% Black Friday Discount” or simply the headline prices are the same but the Black Friday Discounts are not as deep?

You would imagine that car part sellers are the same as 95% of other business in that they’ve had a terrible year. There are always two schools of thought on either abolish/reduce sales/push up prices to maximise the revenue for the sales that you do make or slash prices and hope to make up the lost profit per transaction by having more transactions.

Realistically how many people are going to buy an extra air filter if the prices are cut? Would have thought they would therefore try and get as much out of each sale as possible

I always buy my servicing parts on Black Friday for the year ahead. Normally buy from Eurocarparts. This year the price seems much higher especially for Mann filters. Crazy prices. So a major service is going to cost me £40 instead of the normal £30 excluding pollen filter. Bosch filters seem to be much cheaper but I always like to buy the best. What's going on?
I've always considered pollen filters to be pointless.  What's the advantage of filtering out pollen (and presumably other airborne stuff) from the cabin of a car when we're quite happy to walk around breathing unfiltered air or drive along with windows open?
I was quoted around £80 to replace the pollen filter in my car during a service so I politely declined their kind offer.  That was about five years ago and I've not yet noticed any detrimental effects - or am I storing up trouble?

You could get the Mann air filter for a reasonable price on Amazon but you had to buy 2 which seemed very strange. I probably will have the car in 2024 but I didn't really want 2. I use the best pollen filters available the Mann Frecious Plus. I only do about 5000 miles a year so change them every 2 years. Are they better than the cheap pollen filters? I really don't know. My wife is always on antihistamines so I get the best.

    Yes, you are.

If that filter gets blocked, you'll have less (or no) air getting in. You may well also find the drain blocking, and water getting in.

Also, you may find bacteria starting to grow.

Whether you think there needs to be a filter or not is a choice for when you buy a car. If your car has one, change it.

It costs me £5 to do a cam belt change , any suggestions on how to do this cheaper without changing to a car without a belt  B) am I being ripped off ? I also have a stock of spark plugs that owe me about 5p each....

If, maybe, perhaps.  I think for £80 a time I’ll deal with those potential problems if they arise.  Having just paid just under £1k for a new headlight assembly I need to save some pennies somewhere. ;)
