I bought a used fiesta from a Ford dealership at the beginning of September.
This dealership has now closed permanently but another branch has taken over their cars.
It is a 30 mile round motorway trip to the nearest branch.
The car has been back twice within the last two months already for faults that they seem to have missed on their inspection, MOT and service.
There was a very faulty brake, they replaced the disc and pads - this fault existed at point of sale.
There was a completely damaged suspension mount - this fault made itself known within two weeks of ownership.
I should have rejected and returned the car after the first fault but the sales people were all over me promising to repair everything and cover the costs etc.
Now the biggest issue - when I bought the car I asked the salesman many times had the cam belt been replaced and have an email talking about it.
He assured me many times the cam belt was replaced last year when it was due and told me he had even double checked it with the previous garage as they had forgotten to stamp the service book.
I decided I didn't really trust him so decided to check up on this.
The previous garage told me today that in the four years they have been servicing and MOTing the car that the cambelt has not been replaced.
The dealer sold me a warranty and other products and I made it clear I was only buying the car because it had been done and he had assured me it is all good and nothing will need to be done to the car as it is all take care of.
With all the issues and the lies to my face I am fed up to the back teeth of the car and I want them to take it back, get my money back and start again!
I can't trust that any of the work was done on the car that he promised me was done.
I'm also concerned about that as these things haven't been replaced etc timely that there may be further damage/faults with the car.
Do I have any grounds for returning/rejecting the car or will they just want the car back to be fixed?
Someone is going to call me back tomorrow to discuss but want to know some options.

So you agreed to buy the car without seeing proof the belt was done?
Do you have anything in writing from the salesman?
When's the belt due (age/mileage?) What age/mileage is the car?

I presume the dealer that's "taken over their cars" is another branch of the same company?
There's no outstanding problems with it? So, no, you have no grounds to reject. "The salesman told me a fib" is not sufficient grounds. Push for a substantial discount on getting the belt (tensioners, water pump) changed, if it's due. If it isn't due yet, there's no issue.

Is it Ford Approved Used, with the Ford-backed warranty? Or is it an aftermarket warranty?

He assured me many times it was done but he couldn't give me any paperwork with the car due to GDPR and it having the previous customers information on.
I asked for it redacted or bits cut out and still he wouldn't give me anything.
I have an email to him asking about why it wasn't stamped with the cam belt change in the service book and he assured me on the phone it was an oversight and it had been done.
He has ignored all of my emails and insisted on only speaking on the phone or face to face.
It is a 2011 fiesta and with this model it is 8 years or 100,000 miles so it was due at September 2019.
It is another branch of the same broad group, Marshall.
It seems to be idling very loudly and I wouldn't say it was running great at the moment so I will take it to a local garage shortly anyways if it continues.
I am not sure it has a Marshall warranty, it is Car Care Plan but I don't think it covers cam belt.
It says "Timing belts are covered provided that the due change has taken place as specified by the manufacturers schedule (proof required) You are not covered for burnt out, lacquered or pitted valves, or any damage resulting from the failure of worn timing belts which have not been replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s service schedule."
Guess I'm just fed up of the blooming thing keep breaking as my last fiesta was so much more reliable. This one seems crap in comparison.
I will try pursue them paying the repair and some money back for the inconvenience.
I think when it is fixed I might just cut my losses and sell it to save me some hassle!
  • What is the relationship between the garage who sold you the car and the one you are currently using? If the only thing they have in common is they are franchised Ford was dealers then who do you think should buy the car off you?

I bought it from Marshall Ford, they have various branches in the East Anglia area but the one I bought it from has closed permanently recently. I got a letter basically saying that all dealings transfer over to another branch, aftersales, servicing, warranty etc. Sorry I wasn't clearer that was what I meant when I said taken over their cars.

First thing is that if the cambelt is due a change and no-one can prove it's had one, get it done before it snaps or any warranty is void.
You've got the faults fixed now, so what's the grounds for rejecting it?

Sorry I'm just overreacting and am mechanically anxious if that is a thing hahaha.
Probably isn't any grounds to be honest but you know when you have just had it up to here with something and it is stressing you out and you just want to see the back of it.
This car has just caused me so much hassle, I had been up the dealership around 7 times as they kept asking to test drive the car to make sure it was safe with the faults and then it going in and out whilst they try to diagnose it and fix it.
I have had so many phone calls and emails from them and to them.
I had just got back on the road after a few years of not driving and this car seemed the perfect car at the perfect time as finding an automatic Fiesta for sale locally is more difficult.
Taking out all of the issues and stress it is a nice vehicle, I plan/ned on keeping it for 3-5 years.
Right now it just isn't running well, it is very loud on idling and feels like the car is vibrating.
I know Fiesta's famously don't like cold starts, hate the cold and a rough Fiesta isn't an unusual thing.
This is my second fiesta and my last one was particularly unfond of the autumn and winter and would idle all over the place.
But I have read the rough idling and engine noise could also be the cam belt.
I am due a call tomorrow about it. I hope I can get them to agree to cover the cost locally or collect the car to do it as it is a motorway drive and I wouldn't want to gun it down there and I will also push for something for inconvenience.
  • Yes  :/
It has been one hell of a rollercoaster ride with this vehicle. *sigh*

So the same squeaking fault as before has returned today and I managed to get a recording of it doing it again.
I also have recording of it doing it before it was "fixed" so I am going to contact them about using my final right to reject the car as it was not fixed on first attempt. I will throw in the other stuff too and see how it goes.
Edit - I have just spoke to the service manager who said he was asked to call about the cambelt but now I want to reject the vehicle he will pass me over to the used cars manager. It is also idling much worse and the whole car is shaking, beyond the normal Fiesta juddering.

If these didn't make alarm bells sound on their own, then surely the combination of them would. It's clear he wanted to ensure you had no written record of the cambelt being changed.
Who pays for a service and doesn't bother about checking that the stamp has been made in the book?
