Of course they ca discriminate by age. If not lenders would have to offer mortgages to 80 year olds.

Barclays will provide real reasons for rejection (assuming being retired is not the real reason)  in much more detail than they would normally do.

I'd be surprised if you got more than "we didn't think we'd make money out of him"
  • Declined me last night on the basis that they didn't think if they gave me a line of credit I'd be able to repay it, which is nonsense. Never missed a CC payment in the 7 years I've used them, but whatever, not much I can do to challenge it. Wanted it to replace my Tesco credit card as my Amex backup and this looked like the best non-Amex, non-points based card about.

My girlfriend, who earns about half what I earn, was accepted so go figure!

I'm retired - not a massive pension of £18,000 but do have investments/savings to draw on - not sure you can put that down as income though. Anyway...

I got a Barclaycard rewards card not problems. A low £200 credit limit initially  :D but once it was issued I was told it could be increased if I produced 2 months pay slips. did that and increased credit to £1800. Also got a Sainsburys card the other day with no hassle at all. Nat West will not give me a Rewards card though even though I have a Nat west reward current account. Oh.....and I got and a Amex reward a couple of months ago.

It all seems a bit random to be honest and lenders will not give reasons for turning you down. I doubt who ever you speak to on the phone knows the reason. I bet the guy the OP spoke to just made a guess using the employment reason.

as they have admitted that they have and continue to treat me less favourably as I am disabled. The complaint is currently with the FOS though.
In what way do they treat you less favorably?
I have a student account with them. I study with the Open University and generally Open University students do not have maintainance loans. The bank’s line is ‘without exception they are expected to work full time or attend a campus uni’
I have a maintenance loan under new rules that state if a student has a permanent disability/disabilities meaning they cannot attend a campus based university and distance learning is their only option, they can apply for a maintenance loan on these grounds.
I was granted my account on equality grounds, as I cannot attend a campus based uni. They saw all the paperwork from SFE stating this (and there was a lot of it) they even saw proof of my disability etc and it was authorised by someone very senior.
Every time I call, they demand to know why I’m not working full time (erm- disability, I work 25 hours and I have a lot of adjustments) and keep telling me I’m not entitled to the account and they’re going to take it off me ‘because Open University students should be working full time’ I’ve also had them tell me that I can’t have an overdraft increase because- no word of a lie- I don’t pay rent, because I use too many taxis (even though they know that it’s the only way I can get about because of my physical disabilities, and I only go out at the moment once a week for shopping- they admitted that they should take reasonable adjustments into account for those who need it) but the biggest issue they have is why I’m not working full time because that’s what they expect. The upheld complaints stated that there needs to be more training on this but I still get grief. I no longer use the account.

  • I have just tried to apply for a Barclaycard Rewards card in response to Martin’s article on overseas spending and been blocked because I have a Barclaycard !? I am a Barclays customer !
    Doesn’t make sense to me.
BTW I am also retired, although I am sure the block did not relate to that as I didn’t get far enough in the form for it to be a factor. Blocked as soon as I indicated I have a Barclaycard.

Currently they only allowing current barclaycard customers to have only one card.

    What is your current Barclaycard?

You can change your existing barclaycard to the rewards one either by calling them or if you use the app by clicking card and then the change to a different card option, if you are eligible then it will show what cards you can change to.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

No. Someone in my household has two.
Yes, it does happen - Barclaycard change their criteria all the time, I've had several at times, and some people have ended up with many Barclaycards from those which have become Barclaycards when Barclays bought other companies (Morgan Stanley, Egg, etc.).

Currently they're only allowing new applications from customers without an existing card, but those with more than one currently can keep them.

They even went through a phase years ago where they'd let you have one "normal" Barclaycard and one "partner" card (the Hilton and IHG cards they used to issue), so it really does depend on what policy they have in place at the time.

At one point barclaycard said you had to have two cards ( one was a new barclaycard amex) .
So even if you didnt want another barclaycard amex you got it anyway along with a bung of £50 or more for complaining .
Both cards spending was on the same statement with 1% and 2% cashback on each  .
The 2% on the amex was for 6mths (perhaps it was a year this was awhile ago so is vague) but the amex 2% barclaycard saved a few pounds.

A few years later they phased the amex out
