As an old codger in my 70s, I applied for and obtained a Barclays Reward card, albeit about 20 months ago. So maybe, it's just that they are generally tightening up on the number of credit cards they are issuing.

We took out a personal loan for car purchase just a couple of weeks ago.  £12K at 2.8% a
That and then applying for the CC may look like you are desperate for credit.  Pragmatic advice for anyone of any status is to leave a few months between applications.  Yes, life does not work like that, but banks seem to.
    That's not the OP

It isn't a critical application and, indeed, I can wait and will also consider a Halifax Clarity card. It's just (frankly) that I am offended that I got declined and want someone in authority to feel awkward in explaining the reasons...
I'm not sure why you would compare your income with minimum wage, it's not generally considered enough to live on let alone repay debts.
Nobody would feel awkward, they don't need to offer a reason as there is no obligation for anyone to offer you a credit card. They can randomly refuse credit if they want.
It's certainly nothing to get offended by.

Hard not to realise that the world has changed somewhat between then and now.

Oh, and the other thing I should perhaps have mentioned is that I have been a Barclays account holder for 50 years...

And? Credit scoring and internal lending policy doesnt account for non existent loyalty points.

I've had a recent experience when applying for a Barclaycard Rewards card, [...] I have been told that they will only offer a card to someone in employment.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the person you spoke to plucked that excuse out of thin air.

I remember going into Barclays  in  Slough in the 1970's and the advisor told me that Barclaycard are a law unto  themselves and Barclays bank would often recommend their customers but were turned down by Barclaycard. Obviously nothing has changed and loyalty certainly means nothing.

Indeed.  We have held the same 2 cashback cards for years.  We pay for  virtually all of our shopping on them, and the bills are always paid in full each month.

One of the cards is Barclaycard (formerly Goldfish) so if this is withdrawn due to our retired status, then we will apply for another card (not essential but handy if the other card is damaged or has a technical problem) from our bank.
