- All flights between the UK and Denmark, Faroe Islands & Greenland were suspended.
- Everyone who has returned from Denmark, Faroe Islands or Greenland in the past 14 days has been told to self-isolate, even those who returned before the Denmark travel corridor was removed.
- Anyone living with someone who has returned from Denmark, Faroe Islands or Greenland in the past 14 days also has to self-isolate.
None of the normal exceptions apply to the above so even airline crews and their families are now being forced to self-isolate.
Anyone trying to use any loopholes to go abroad (or to go abroad for pleasure from Scotland, Wales or NI) might want to take the above in to consideration. There was no real warning of it happening and only a couple of weeks ago the government put Denmark back on the travel corridor list.
Looks like I am grounded for the rest of the year with Germany and Sweden joining the list as well recently.
My remaining trip to Venice in December has just been cancelled by BA.0 -

first time I’ve seen a requirement for those in the same household as someone returning from abroad being obliged to isolate.
Nobody who contracts this strain is any worse off than someone contracting plain old-fashioned COVID so it's not serious in that regard.

Note that there are criminal charges you could be faced with if you take that hypothetical job paying a lot of money and then provide incorrect medical advice to the government which directly causes the death or serious illness of British citizens.
There is a certain group of people who seems to think that COVID is the end of human civilization as we know it and if they go outside their front door they'll be dead in two weeks. OK, that's perhaps being a little OTT but I think you understand where I'm coming from. I'm worried that these people will hear about this as being "serious" and demand even more absurd restrictions on daily life, under the incorrect assumption that this is serious because it has a higher mortality rate. That does not appear to be the case at all.
It does, however, appear that the specific protein spike the existing vaccines were aimed at is different in this strain so they may not protect against this. I do understand taking the actions that are currently being taken with this outbreak and if it works, brilliant. However, I suspect that this was inevitable and will happen again in the not too distant future, perhaps several times. And with the fairly high infection rate of COVID it may be out in the general population before anyone notices it (and that is quite possibly the case in Denmark already). I do not believe, unfortunately, that we can produce a vaccine fast enough, or produce enough does of that vaccine or administer it fast enough, to wipe out COVID before another strain pops up and we're back to square one.
I suspect we'll be playing whack-a-mole with COVID strains until the end of time, much like we do with flu, unless we can come up with a much less specific form of vaccine. And unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon.
So serious in some respects, but largely inevitable I suspect.0 -

Under the new regime could you still fly from Edinburgh to Gibraltar via London Heathrow , returning the same way and not have to self-isolate ?0

One thing to be careful about regarding Gibraltar is the airport is often listed on web pages with headings of things like 'ten most dangerous airports in the world.' Of course both BA and Easyjet only use competent pilots so if you land or take off from that airport it'll be perfectly safe. However, in extreme weather conditions the airport will be forced to close, while Malaga airport will likely remain open. That means if you're unlucky your flight might be diverted to Malaga, which will obviously mean you've entered Spain and will have to self-isolate on return.0 -

English rules, however you arrived here, require you to have good reason to be outside your home, going on holiday isn’t a good reason.
If you did make the journey there and back without visiting Spain, you wouldn’t need to self isolate.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
