A smart meter is waiting for me
Just heard by email from EDF that, "We're ready to install your smart meter". I'm not having a smart meter. Anyone got recent experience of how best to deal with EDF on this matter. Ignore? Phone them to reject it? I should add that my tariff is one that's tied into having a smart meter, but when I enquired at set-up time I was told there's no compunction to have one.

Did you actually read the Terms and Conditions of your tariff ?
They could change you to a different tariff if they cannot update your meter.
Smart Meters are great, no more faffing about doing your own readings, accurate bills and a dinky little IHD which you can use if you want to.0 -
Doesnt sound very smart0

Is it a big deal, I have one. New metres with a separate screen whereby you can take metre readings, so no need to go out into the cold or get down on your hands and knees to take a reading.

So far, ignoring has worked well for me for a couple of years now. Just don't expect the letters/emails to stop.One day I might get round to asking what they are willing to offer me in return for the inconvenience of having the meter fitted.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -
Sounds good. I'll just ignore it.Ectophile said:So far, ignoring has worked well for me for a couple of years now. Just don't expect the letters/emails to stop.One day I might get round to asking what they are willing to offer me in return for the inconvenience of having the meter fitted.0 -
One of the (failed) companies I was with, sent me repeated emails via a third party, re my "agreed" install of a smart meter. I replied to each email declining the offer as the tariff I was on ,had no stipulation re smart install. They tried via phone as well.
EVEN AFTER the supplier had failed and I had transferred to the SOLR, they were STILL trying to make an appointment!!1 -
I recently had an email from Lawrie Beck, Avros installer, saying they were ready to install a smets2. I declined. I won't have one until I'm somehow forced to. I don't need one. I'm happy to take my own readings every month and use a spreadsheet to record and monitor my usage. It seems Smart meters cause hassle for no actual gain for people like me.3

@JohnB47, please explain the hassle.
It's just a meter with a radio connection to a network.
You can still take a reading whenever you want, or even better, use the IHD to see it from the comfort of your sofa.

IF it works initially AND IF it stays smart on transferring from one supplier to another - many current installations have gone dumb even if they worked when installed. Not many of the smaller and cheaper suppliers are currently supporting smarts.The_Fat_Controller said:
