Come back and tell us what he said.

laughable.i would happily move in with someone and live there rent free and only pay pills, and save my money lol. But hell, the reverse will not happen, i'm not paying for someone else to let him save up while i pay mortgage.the fair solution is for you to work out what it will cost to rent a place in that area, and only pay half. But no one lives in ppl's homes for free. The bills are also yours, you are not doing him a favour, but why should he pay for your living? we dont tell our landlords, "i'm not paying towards your mortgage cuz im getting nothing in the long term"!! we pay cuz guess what, thats lifeyou seem to think you are entitled to live in his place rent free to save money cuz you dont like his area lol, waw ppl these days, just stay in your place and pay your rent, if he lets you in rent free, thats kind of him, not cuz you're entitled or cuz "it is fair", it is not1

I’m also of the opinion that you should pay your way. Whether that’s half of bills and mortgage or half the bills and then equal to half the mortgage into a living expenses budget you can’t expect to be able to save up £xxx every month whilst Oh pays the mortgage. As somebody else said, even teenage kids should pay their keep.Mortgage started August 2020 £69,700
Mortgage ends Aug 2050 MFW: Aug 2027
Current Balance: £58,678
MFW2020 #156 £723.13
MFW2021 #26 £1184.71
MFW2022 #11 £197.87
MFW2023 £785
MFW 2024 £528.15Determined to make it!2 -
Well keeping each other company, kisses and cuddles isn’t that priceless and worth more than half the rent/mortgage. OP will be in the same room, same bed, moving in when he/she should also be buying his/her own place. Paying half of rent she/he would have paid elsewhere will be too much and if he/she asked for this than the oh is just trying to get a lodger with all the other benefits for free.Paying half the expenses and a token extra for being in the house(rent) will be more than enough! If I were in this position and oh asked for me to pay a lot of rent I will buy my own place and we see each when we can as the relationship will be showing signs of failure not in the not so distant future!Initial mortgage bal £487.5k, current £258k, target £243,750(halfway!)

They can agree a lodger's term!the ridiculous bit is... if both move to a rented place, they'll both pay 50/50 and the lucky landlord gets his mortgage paid, but somehow the OH is not allowed to get help paying his mortgage from someone living there.as for "i will buy my own place if he asks", she cant afford one! she wants to live rent free to start saving on his expense! How is that even remotely fair!0

@hannah021 to be clear, I have more than enough for a deposit and am in a strong position to buy my own home. We would just rather live together then seperatley.2

All those saying the OP should be paying rent do you think the boyfriend should declare that income to HMRC, and no it wouldn't be covered by the RAR scheme because he isn't letting a room, and comply with HSE legislation by getting a gas safety certificate if there are gas appliances in the property?4

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable only paying half the bills and living rent free in my partners property. If I didn't want to pay any rent, at the very least I think I would do something like pay for a majority of the food / other bills to make up for the free accommodation.3
