Too fat for my uniform

OK let's just get this out of the way 1st I'm a big girl. I had a very long weight loss journey I lost a 100 pounds but still need much more to lose. I started a job after covid at a different location same company so just carried over my uniform. This was in June. Now we are getting new uniforms. Bakers are required to wear. It plainly is a smaller size and no way in hell it fits. Can they let me go because of this. What are my rights? Please no negative comments

What did they say when you asked if they had larger sizes?

Not currently? Not ever? Did they offer an alternative?
  • Is the uniform something that you can replicate in a piece of clothing that will fit?

    This OP.
Surely they can just get you a lsrger size.

Do you anticipate any negative comments OP ?
  • Give the new uniform a go. Tell them your size and let them handle it. x I know last year when I worked in a reservations office after hotel changed branding and brought in a dress uniform with a knot twist feature - thought it would only suit slim people but actually turned out and looked OK whether big or smaller framed. Because it was new uniforms throughout everyone got the opportunity afresh to put down size rather then making do with whatever of the old uniform was in hr's cupboard.

What's stopping you asking for a larger size?

they can't let you go as that would be discrimination.  they would have to provide one that fits you, that is their obligation.

Well done for losing 100lbs - that's a great achievement even if you want to achieve more. Uniform is for everyone to look just that 'uniform'. When I worked for a retailer some years ago, they had the 'suit many people sizes' distributed across the network, and then the garment manufacturer dealt with anyone outside of the range of sizes they'd selected to order in bulk. We had a lot of people that were outside of the 'suit many people sizes' - but the company still provided uniform for everyone, no matter what shape or size they were. The first step will be to show that the range of available sizes aren't currently suitable - and find out whether they can arrange a custom uniform for you (with enough to allow you a reasonable wash cycle). Is the organisation a large one? Are there are any other colleagues (male or female) in a similar position?

I'm not sure that being overweight is a protected characteristic which would cause dismissal to be classed as discrimination.  The the OP, how long have you worked for the company?  If over 2 years you do have some protection against dismissal, but below 2 years it is much easier for them to get rid of you.
If the uniform simply doesn't fit the employer either needs to provide one which will, or permit you to wear alternative suitable clothing.

i would think giving someone the sack because their size would be considered discrimination.  in the same way that you discriminate against skin colour, sex, age etc.  if the person's size does not stop them performing their duties adequately, then there is no grounds for dismissal.
