As this keeps cropping up, you have to wonder how many low-hanging fruit on the gullible tree end up paying these scammers.
theres no mention of these being the typical charges that people receive for parking etc

They could easily be perfectly "valid" speeding infractions
In which case, what do you recommend?  Has anyone mentioned 'parking'?

Mine was for a speeding fine in Italy in 2020, £1400 CLI want and wondered wether they’d find it worth their time to jump through the hoops to get it, as it’s a substantial amount compared to others. So far I’ve ignored every letter from Italy and the DCA. July 2025 it will be statute barred.

Brexit might give them their first difficulty. A claim raised in the UK for a 'contravention' in a foreign land, tried in a UK court against the motoring laws and statutes of that foreign land?  Not going to happen.

You can bet your bottom dollar that all this firm has to do is fork out the cost of obtaining a list of outstanding contraventions, fooling the DVLA to give them keeper details and the cost of postage and an envelope and then firing off these letters to unsuspecting victims for them to get only one to pay up and they have covered their costs.

There are far too many people out there who don't have a clue about their rights who will pay into the scam, whether it was for parking or speeding or whatever, as though that mattered.

They cannot raise a claim as there is no foreign civil debt & even if there were it would be all but impossible to enforce repayment of an overseas debt in a UK court. If the fine was for speeding then it's a penalty not a civil debt so while they might theoretically be able to apply to the court to extradite the offender there would be insuperable issues with evidence.

Thanks for all the info! I have no idea how it all works. I can see why people would start flapping in these situations.

In terms of evidence (I know it most likely will
never land before any court) I did admit I was the driver to the Italian authorities when they wrote to me about my first fine back in 2020, and I stupidly engaged in the ‘three letter process” with CLI (durrr) and they sent me all the Italian fine letters as proof of the debt. But now I’m confident more than ever to just ignore them.

Good. I am astonished people ever respind to this scam.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
