Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Beautiful blue skies - not too cold (out of the shade) and I'm not working today... got bored with the housework and thought I'd pot up a couple of the seabeet and the hostas for mum to take when they visit next weekend - get everything out - it starts to hail (from the still clear blue sky)!
Only lasted maybe a minute, but I'm thinking it's a sign that someone wants me to finish tidying the lounge firstI'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.4 -
@Farway remember your Forsythia pic in February?
Mine is just coming into flower now but not enough to take a photograph yet, plus it's 40 mph windy
Believe it or not my daffodils are still not out, was at nearby hospital today and they have thousands but think they get more sun than mine
Unopened tulips are horizontal at the moment with the wind, hope they recover
Did get one nice day for gardening, sieved some home made compost in birthday present sieve into birthday present wheelbarrow and weeded and mulched a couple of small bits
Also pruned broken bits of James Roof and tied up the good bits
Weather is all over the place, greenhouse went from 0 to 47 one day this week but outside barely reached double digits
Shouldn't get that high but autovent is disabled until I can get replacement fitted
I am itching to get out there now
Tomatoes and courgettes are inside until greenhouse stops hitting low temperatures
I once planted a melon seed which germinated in one week but I was not at home

Sorry to hear you've had the lurgy, Dusty, hopefully that's you on the mend now.
Sorry to hear about your DIL too, Farway.
AR, I'm envious of your lovely wide windowsill. My 6-pack egg box is hanging over the edge of mine because it's so narrow. I think my Kerr's Pink are looking more viable than the Maris Piper at the moment - I've only got 3 of each. Apparently the KPs were loose in a paper sack in a greengrocers, whereas I bought the MP in Aldi - it'll be interesting to see what happens with both varieties.
It sounds like it's blowing a hoolie out there at the moment - the forecast is light rain showers and a fresh breeze. No gardening is forecast for me today then...'A watched potato will never chit'...4 -
Posh Friend's posh coffee and posh biscuits aren't a bit posh. She's a Lidler and when they have Italian week she scoops coffee/biscuits/ice-cream/olives/all kinds of everything into her trolley by the armful. She was brung up proper, with plenty, but now she's posh and poor due to ex-husband
Anyway.
Weren't those competition trees lovely? Could you see them Farway or has your bbc ticket run out? I doubt Ska tree will be a contender cos it's a lazy swine. It's still only got one bud, bit bigger and more open than it was but it still is only one. I'll have to put my listening ears on and go see if I can hear it pining.
Maybe morries will provide something more unusual than a fuchsia in the coming weeks for your volunteer patch :fingerscrossed: Speaking of fuchsias - last night Monty said they like cool and damp places so I'll have to move one of mine... it does look like it's pining so he might be right.
If anybody's fancying yellow cascading peardrop toms they're only from B+Q. My hanging baskets that are literally hanging baskets notion is juddering to a halt I think. I bought some brackets to get them up on the back wall but my garden faces NW, so to get the sun they'll have to go on the fence. But I'm not entirely sure it'd take the weight of basket+soil+water+plant. I'm reviewing that situation. I might have to give it up entirely and leave them on someone elses car
How you doing today Dusty? You forget that lurgy is still around now that it's not the centre of attention on the news. I hope your recovery isn't lengthy
I hope DiL is alright too Farway. Is she well stocked with big bottles of burny water medicine?
I know what you mean about pot sizes taff. I thought last year my blue trug things were huge but now I'm wondering if I need bigger ones or just another few of the same size ha haa!
Cooled right off here this morning, musical my phone says (I'll never tire of that). We had a beautiful day yesterday, bright if a bit too windy and today's the same. Possibly. Oddly enough they've all given the same forecast. Bit unnerving is that.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.4 -
-taff said:Dusty, i grew a chocolate habanero last year....... Maybe rub some in your knee? Or mustard or something....The treatment for my knee is the opposite of that; an ice pack from the freezer. I did once have a mustard bath to get rid of a cold, 'cos the school dance was coming-up, and I wanted to appear as attractive as possible to a young lady. Sadly, although the remedy worked (thanks Mum!
) by the time I got to smooching with the girl, I was so drunk it probably didn't matter!
Farway said:Dusty, does sound like the thing we mustn't mention. DIL is a magnet for the thing. But now it has affected her with long thingy, she keeps coming over weak & dizzy, off work and unable to drive or go out because never knows when she'll come over odd. Hopefully you will shake it off without any after effects except an empty Sottish medicine bottle.Returning to lighter things, I noted on my last trip out that Lidl & Morries both had apple trees around the £13-15 mark and that Morries' looked the better-grown. I didn't look at the fuchsias because we have a specialist coming to talk at our Garden Club, and he'll be bringing rooted cuttings at £1.Paspatur, we've been receiving some of your 40mph wind overnight + rain and hail. Blustery conditions are set to continue today, so more enforced rest and a bit of seed sowing, probably. I'm fine, poppy and Bluey, thanks. If I'm allowed one last hellebore picture, I snapped this beauty down by the stream recently. Shame to waste it.

Lovely photo Dusty! That's gorgeous
Same weather here. Sun blazed and woke me up only to find 6c, biting gale and came over so dark the lights had to go on. Great lumps of rain falling.
Last night it suddenly bashed rain on the roof and doors and i thought there was something seriously wrong with the house
I got the strawberry patch dug over for it to dry out as it was growing moss. Planted new plants and relocated the old ones in hope of new babies or fruit.
So now not just watered in but I'm afreared they may have floated away!!
Apples aren't showing any blooms. Leaves are coming. Doesn't look like it's going to be a good crop.
Some unplanted tiny potatoes appeared with digging. No idea how they got there.
Everything is still sitting and waiting for the weather to change I guess.
Good try there Bluey, they had some cheapie hanging baskets and liners in and around now you've got brackets. Too much watering for me. Id hang more bird feeders.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Cracking photo there Dusty, nicely framed by the trees in the background. Is that gonna be March in our calendar?
If it wasn't for the wind it'd be a lovely day here. Gusterly westerly is picking up now and could reach 40mph this aft, so hopefully all yous that had it overnight will get a bit of peace from it now.
Ska and pear progress. Hard to get good pics in all this wind but here you go -
Can I ask - what's the matter with moss? Lovely Neighbour spends a lot of time and money trying to get rid of moss from her lawn and pots etc, whereas I would happily be ankle deep in the stuff...I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.5 -
Started sunny, but the forecast is dire with all the grotty stuff you lot have heading for mePaspatur said:@Farway remember your Forsythia pic in February?

DiL is more of an Oirish Cream person, but I every little helpsTrees progressing well Blue, the bottom one, Ska?, does have all the looks of apple, with that spotty skin bark.Dusty, great pic again, and soon to have new fuchsias. The Morries ones were tempting, and only £1,30. I could still succumb on my next visit, which reminds me, I need to prune the one at the front, it's just starting to get leaves. Sorry to rub it in Paspatur.YoungBlueEyes said:Can I ask - what's the matter with moss? Lovely Neighbour spends a lot of time and money trying to get rid of moss from her lawn and pots etc, whereas I would happily be ankle deep in the stuff...Here's the volunteer front bit, hopefully brightens up the view for folks walking by. The pots to the right have Morries pansies in, not yet fully open. The large clump of daffs, behind the bird table, is the Memorial bit, there was a weeping cherry in there but had to go to make way for a poppy. The green thing to the right & behind the bird table is a dead stump covered in Ivy. Easier than trying to get a dead stump out, and the insects / bees love the ivy flowers. The two far large pots have lilies in them, heavily scented, which can be smelt from the roadEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens9 -
Good morning all ,lots of posts to read. No way of remembering who was doing what,so hope you all are now well.
love the Pics.
I was half way upstairs last night when the noise from the wind made me stop to wonder what was going on ,I thought I would fly away to OZ. Then the rain was lashing at the windows. I woke to sunshine but still strong winds. The blossom on the kojo no mai is now all on the floor as usual the winds came at the moment it was looking perfect. My sambucus nigra is just started to get its leaves , and the Red Robin is finally filled out a bit and has the lovely red leaves . I love all shades of leaves and have a good mix all year round for colour.YBE I love a hebe such a good doer, and lots of types sizes and colours .Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.6 -
