The aubretia seeds I planted a month ago are still just soil, the only thing growing is the tiny flies from the damp compost . They are in the cold conservatory so, I’m taking your advise to put in the east facing window with some cling film over them ,before I give up .Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.6

Crystal blue sky with bladdy hailstones pelting out of it here, so I’m temporarily inside. I was finally getting on with weeding and actual gardening…The 2 pics I put up - the top one with one close up with a few bobbins in it is the Ska, the pear is the bottom one
I’m only saying pear cos that’s what was on the Tesco label so it ain’t gospel. What are the odds I’ve got 3 apple trees ha haa! (Suspect short odds, or evens even.)
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.7 -
YBE - are your fence posts concrete or wood?
I'd consider a post on the DIY board (with a pic of the fence in question) - it could be there's a bracket out there that would be safe and secure
Or you could still do the veg basket idea, just use them as normal containers and don't hang them (use bush rather than hanging plants)
Weirdly warmer outside the house than in today (thanks to the old thick walls) so spent some time this morning picking out some shooting bind weed - one disadvantage of the builder's coming in to take out the hedge and level is they spread the root fragments everywhere!
Medlar is in fairly full leaf, pear is starting to look nice and green (but only on one side weirdly) but apples, cherries and quince are still sleeping despite being in the full sun part of the garden.I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.3 -
The fence is planks of wood but there are 3 of the original concrete pillars from when it was a little wire fence. I’m wondering if I can’t lash them to them somehow… easiest/safest/wisest idea is to do toms in trugs and buckets like last year. I’m still pondering though. Apple on the left, pear on the right. That’s a sod about the bindweed, I feel your pain 😣 Are you going manual removal or have you got earth shattering chemicals
Oh and fingers firmly crossed for your aubretia wort 🤞🏻I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.5 -
YBE, how good are the wooden posts? Sound or iffy?If sound, how about screwing large coat hooks in and hooking a basket onto them? For added authenticity, perhaps a local S/market has them?PS, would it be possible to slip a basket handle over the top of the wooden post, is there enough of a gap between post & fence at the top?

Posts are sound, and there’s a gap at the top of them that might be useful. I’ve got decking screws and big bolts and cable ties, and a Heath Robinson brain, so it could be a goer. The handles won’t go over the top cos the angle’s wrong. Well they do but…
Im going to take the handles off so they go along the length rather than across the breadth, itms.Edit - Ta da!Might have to only do one cos my trees are in the way by the other posts.I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.7 -
Could you put the other one on the ground underneath - so it would look like your tumbling plants were falling from one to the other (or would that look silly)?I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.4

There's talk of the aurora being visible tonight and the next couple of nights, although the almost full moon might scupper things as well as any cloud. Look North if you've got the right conditions (and a decent camera/phone, which unfortunately I haven't...)
