Awful weather - typical Brits talk

We did indeed get a torrential downpour on our first night here, Farway, well spotted. It only lasted about 10 minutes and thankfully we were in the accommodation at the time.
Lemon top ice cream on order for today, YBE, but not in Scarborough. We're actually viewing a house with DD this afternoon - fingers crossed for her that this is the one.
York yesterday was grim - a 45 minute delay due to roadworks (in boiling hot sun) and then York itself was mad busy and too hot for me, plus we had a rubbish takeaway lunch that cost an arm and a leg. I could only stand it for 2 hours instead of the 4 hours we'd planned. We ended up going to the out of town Asda to buy a bottle of Baileys because we knew it was on offer thereBack to the accommodation and thankfully the (pointless) roadworks had been removed by then. Scarborough planned for tomorrow and hopefully another lemon top and a boat trip.
Your shipbag cat story made me laugh, YBE. I'm sure your lovely neighbour will forgive you.
I'm looking forward to the raspberry ripple/cornish cream lily pic, Farway, it sounds lovely.
Dusty, I love the cut hay photo. Not sure about the opportunist crow pic though.
I hope you get lovely weather for the wedding on Friday, wort, not too hot though.
I've seen so many garden 'shops' here outside supermarkets etc. I could have spent a small fortune, but they'd all be deid by the time I got them home
Nice and sunny in North Yorkshire today, with a high of 24 degrees. Drizzle and a high of 16 degrees at home, but Friday onwards is sunny and in the 20s for a few days. We're home on Friday...'A watched potato will never chit'...6 -
We're long overdue for food waste collection here (and where I was before). It was the reason I got the hotbin in 2020 when bin collections were disrupted. While I generate very little waste that can't be composted (and I really do need to generate a LOT of compost), it would be nice to have stuff like fish skin and cooked meat/bones collected as they don't compost well in the hotbin (you're supposed to crush bones!).

Up early again, and off to Morries on Milk run, but with any Posh dahlia on a wish listMilk etc OK, zero dahlias, none in, there were fjord bound fruit trees for £4, were £20. Left those, but had there been an apricot, I would've chanced it.It is scorching already, that sun is burning, never mind Factor 50, coveralls would be betterDusty, busy complying with dictum about making hay while sun shines.Roof repair next?My courgettes were just starting to wilt when I returned from Morries, I thought they would be fine, looks like I was wrong. Given a good drink!YoungBlueEyes said:Have you got the "Waze" app on your phone? I always use that when I'm doing long distances but also sometimes just to make sure I'm not running into any closed roads etc when I'm tootling round here. Can recommend.Dustyevsky said:Among those are the ex-Bishop dahlias, which I was disappointed with at first, because their flowers were facing downwards on droopy stems. They're now looking up more, so maybe I was too hasty. With hindsight, drooping flower heads would be ideal for my requirement with people looking upThe new waste collection rules, I can foresee even more problems with the peat free compost using municipal wasteDon't get me wrong, I'd love to chuck garden waste in the spud peelings and fish heads, for free, but I bet it won't be like that.More like we'll get feathers & bones as well as plastic & sticks in the peat free compost. Was it Taff had that & all the world's rats turned up for dinner?Just refreshed, PP, I can imagine York in the heat, it's usually crowded anyway. At least Scarborough should have a sea breeze to cool it a bit.No gardening today, too hot. I may have to use the hose on the back later. One lily, with free bluebottleThe other big lily I'm going to need to sort out a longer lens to capture it properlyEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens8

"The exact date for the implementation of new bin rules in England, which will see all households equipped with four separate containers, has been disclosed. The new regulations, set to be enforced from April 1 next year, include a separate weekly collection for food waste from households.
Under the new default bin requirements, households and workplaces will need separate containers for residual (non-recyclable) waste, food waste (which can be mixed with garden waste if suitable), paper and card, and all other dry recyclable materials such as plastic, metal and glass. The type of containers may range from bags and bins to stackable boxes."
Daily Mirror. (Other low quality news sources are available.)
The bolded part suggests some garden waste will be accepted 'free'We already do the above. The food waste container is quite small, but I still add a few weeds to fill it up a bit!
At work we have loads more bins which is trial and error but seems to be working okay. We've had this to do since the beginning of April, though still nothing has been decided by the council on food waste.7 -
I’m from North Yorkshire and I remember having hessian sacks for plastic bottles etc - I think they could fasten with a Velcro strip, but it was pretty useless and on a windy day everyone’s plastics were flying around the road.
I’m in a seaside town at the moment and it’s roasting 🥵 only a slight breeze considering I’m on the seafront…

A wee lemon top ice cream for you, YBE, made by my own fair hand… (wee being the operative word) 😁🍋🍦

Oooo the ice cream looks nice Poppy.
Not sure about the turbines though. It doesn't look inviting. I went swimming tonight with the sun setting and sparkling off the waves. Lovely. Had no camera of course so I just swam in the sparkles.
Lovely lilies Farway. They really do look like raspberry ripple. I can't grow them at all and I love them.
I've finally got some gardening news! I have ripe apricots 😁
Still hard compared to the supermarket ones but they look ripe so I had a tiny wiggle and one fell off like an apple. Tempted to taste but I've left it to soften in the fruit bowl, my teeth not being what they were.
Also my first tomato 😁
It was one of the honey something that I bought from the hardware shop. I may find the label under all the foliage.. they seem to be very bushy. They're tiny but prolific , delicious so seed to be saved.
Seems we have only had 1.3mm of rain in the last 6 weeks and temperature was 30 in the sun 😎 watering again as plants dying now.
Too hot to do much. Tried a walk under the trees on a hill but it was exhausting.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Morning Bluey. Is it work again this morning?
Does anyone there buy the staff ice cream in this weather?
It was 25c in the bedroom at 7am so I've been up early to feed me and the birds.
The watering has worked so I'll have to do a bit more today. But most plants in the sun are looking ropey. No flowers and leaves a rusty colour. The only floriferous bit is the shady bit.
The fields around are all yellow like wheat which is a problem because it's mixed farming around here and the animals need grazing.
I don't know if the wild ponies are eating at night but during the day they are huddled in an unhappy mass under the trees.
This has gone on so long.
I'll try and get a photo from the top of a hill later to show what I mean.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Re the bin saga, we already have that arrangement, garden and food in full size bin . Collection 1 x 2 week. Plus the 3 other bins. We don’t at the moment pay (whispers). It’s been in place many years now.
If they are coming for food waste it makes sense to take all the compostable garden as well. Mine is full every time mainly garden.
Dusty the bowman is pretty shame about its longevity, good that the dahlias have perked up though.
YBE the venue emailed Dd to say Aircon is broken 😔🥵 hopefully fixed by tomorrow 🙏🏻 no church. My other Dd is waiting for solicitor ( not the name we are calling him😜) to complete on her house , coming up for 2 years on an empty house and she’s in rented!! Lost count of the lost paperwork 🙄
2p those apricots look great, will it overwinter? Or is it tender?
I should go mow the lawn before I shower today, next wedding appointments at lunch time.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.8 -
Up early again, too hot for sleeping, but I took advantage & have already watered, with hose, the potted stuff at the back, plus filled the bird bathOh, apricots 2P, they look yummy, and toms too.Best I can hope for is blackberries soon, turned red & on the wayNice ice cream PP, and I like the windmills out at sea, with the gulls waiting for some chipswort said:Re the bin saga, we already have that arrangement, garden and food in full size bin .
