Yesterday was beautiful, warm and sunny, back to grey and cloudy today but this dry period looks to be mainly holding for the next two weeks so can't grumble too much.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces9 -
I don't mind the frost when it's a sunny day. Was chilly getting up though.Roughly about 3c here (fencers broke the thermometer and of course there's none in the shop so far this year) but the sun is shining brightly and the daffs are glowing and there's shadows. Most people don't notice the shadows but they can make some pertty patterns to add to the gardenMy lilac is showing signs of buds, it's in a huge pot and refuses to be removed to put in new compost and it's suffering.Wisteria and climbing hydranga, raspberry canes also showing signs of life. But my Lungwort will not grow. I'm envious of that photo. It used to grow like Topsy on the poor soil under the lilac in my last place. No chance to get out and get some rural photos again today. More socialising on the cards so fingers crossed this weather lasts a bit longer.Still Farway will have some gardening news when he gets back.So far my £5 apple tree is alive but not even producing a leaf.My bargain/not a bargain Apricot is still alive and showing signs of flowering buds but also split, weeping bark
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Lovely shadow photo, twopenny, I think I want your table and chairs
What colour is your Lilac?? That's another plant on my hit-list and it's good to know they can be grown in pots, even if yours is struggling a bit at the moment.
Lunatic, I've never looked at Instagram (and I don't think I want to after reading your description of it), but I appear to have been automatically signed up for it somehow. I remember seeing something on Facebook(??) with an Instagram user name that is my name, but a different spelling. Some of my FB friends have started following it (I get notifications) so I think I'm going to have to try and delete it, just in case I've been hacked and the hacker is posting AI images of me in short shorts and tight tops haha
I must have seen the Corpach shipwreck photos somewhere though, as I knew it existed before my DH suggested we go there. It was the same with the stunningly beautiful Vatersay beach on Barra and the gate leading to it - I'd seen photos of it before we visited there last year...
I've been out for a walk (still no sign of any sun here) and my ankles are complaining. Just wondering if anyone on here has tried Comfrey oil for soothing aches and pains??'A watched potato will never chit'...8 -
Lovely photos allCan't take credit really for the lungwort (and there are many more dotted around) - they're mostly self-seeders, tho I guess I must have planted one once, somewhere :Can anyone guess (or id) the subject of the non-lungwort pic? it's been an unexpected success here....8

I recognised it when I first looked but can't remember what it is. It's familiar....................Poppy, they were £50 cheapies about 15yrs ago and I painted them with all purpose paint to make a set in my last place.Edwardian house, Edwardian garden. That was fun.I think they may be navy blue this year as the bench is now out the front of a modern place

2p that’s a lovely sitooterie. The shadows would make a great tile pattern. I have 2 lilacs in pots , the first is a standard so it’s small and does well in a pot. It smells so nice that I bought a regular one from the Fjord section in the GC, which I think was in the wrong spot as for years I didn’t see it blossom, but it did grow. I moved it last year and it does blossom now, though I think it would prefer to be in the ground.
Pp I certainly won’t be any where near a ski lift. I get worse about heights the older I get. I can’t even watch someone lean over an edge of a height without my stomach churning. You have fabulous scenery up there, I love beaches and that looks like a wonderfully secluded spot.
Dusty that is a cracking dawn photo the colours are beautiful,I could hang that on the wall. I thought the pink sky we had here yesterday was good, but not a patch on yours.
Farway hope the peas are behaving, and the dahlias aren’t lost.
Im off now for a week, using my hols before year end.👏🏻 Still I woke at silly o clock so the wash is almost done ready for the line and the sun is peeking out. I may try to go round with some feed for the plants ,thanks for the prompt, I always forget.
The weather has been mostly bright but cold , tbh I don’t think we have had much rain since Xmas apart from a bit of mizzly stuff now and then.
I’m enjoying the lighter mornings and evenings. So much better than going and coming home from work in the dark.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.8 -

As for the very advanced leafy growth, it looks like hydrangea, but I'd think slightly too early, and you'd know what it was.
Loved the chairs and their shadows, 2p.We have the chairs, but they're not ours. They came to stay along with a shed and many other things, including 8' evergreens in pots, when an elderly couple, struck by illness, moved back 'oop norf' last October. Family are supposed to be collecting the stuff, but as the months go by......
I've not tried comfrey oil, pp, but I know the folks in days of yore used to use the leaves for sprains and even breaks, hence the old name 'knit bone.' People seem to rate the oil/ointment, and with ibuprofen being not without drawbacks I can't mention, it might be OK. So long as it doesn't smell like comfrey water!Personally, a hot bath with something nice smelling in it, works for me.
Thanks for your kind comment on my dawn picture, pp & wort. It was probably even prettier this morning, but I didn't hang about, as I was only in my PJs with a fleece and wellies! I let the hens out and shot back indoors. Not much news here, as yesterday was partly housework nonsense, and then lots of running around on the ride-on. I'm mowing a kind neighbour's garden, as her husband is very ill, but their mower's packed-up, and mine's not ideal for their terrain, being smaller, not bending in the middle, and no knobbly tyres. Got through about an acre overall, there, and over at our place. Only 2 dog toys destroyed!I've failed miserably to photograph any unusual birds on the feeders, despite them going like a fair, so here is a shot that's nothing special. However, the blue tit looks so prim & proper, I can just imagine its thoughts as the sparrows arrive en masse and barge others out of the way:"There is no such thing as a low-energy rich country." Back again after my day out, frosty but sunny, like yesterday, seems we have a warm plume for a few more days.Lots of reading & photos to catch up with.It was so pleasant in the sun yesterday, we sat out in the sun for lunch, the back of DD house is patio & sheltered. Plus, it has a large lilac for shade in summer. Buds on it, but no leaves yet. There is also a large red camellia, with honey bees all over the flowers. It does look a bit jaundiced though, my guess is previous owners used to use sequestrene on it, DD of course does not.No doubt Horticultural DGD will inform her mum about the errorJames Grieve apple was duly planted, and last year's Purple Haze apple is still alive, with some fruit buds showing.Jeyes fluid, by coincidence I saw a post on FB, the new Eco stuff is a complete let-down. It's clear, not muck brown, and smells floralOf course, it is utterly useless, but someone said you can still buy the Real Thing in real chandlers, agricultural suppliers, etc. Probably near the Mole traps.Wasn't JF supposed to deter moles as well? Rag soaked in the tunnels, I think.Ta Ra, I have peas! Shoots have appeared
. Maybe later today, I will transfer to a soil based seed tray.
Plus, dahlia seeds are up in the airing cupboard, not forgotten this time. I'll move to a window later.Germinated peas, at lastEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens8 -
Yay, well done on the pea shoots germination, Farway. Do you know how long the shoots take to grow to become edible?? Yum.
Love the blue tit and Sid Sparra pic, Dusty
I've been googling the comfrey oil and it sounds like it should be used with caution, with toxicity and liver issues mentioned... I'll keep reading. I do love a nice hot bath, so maybe that with some epsom salts added might be better.
wort, enjoy your week off. I'm the same with seeing other people teetering on the edge of things, makes my head sway a bit
twopenny, I love your table and chairs even more now - they look so nice in that setting
I came across this in our utility this morning...
I'm not sure how it got in, but we've got logs in a cardboard box in there, so maybe it hitched a lift.
Anyone know what this is?? I've got two clumps of it in a weed-ridden bed. It looks too 'sturdy' to be just a clump of grass??...
OT - the BBC say 11 degrees, but my phone says 8 and feels like 0. I'm sat here with layers on, topped off with a long cardigan and I still feel cold, so I think my phone is more accurate. Grey skies and no sun forecast today either - I'll have to do some domestic nonsense to warm up instead...'A watched potato will never chit'...8 -
