I'd forgotten that! It was a beautiful, very thin and sharp new moon with the old moon in her arms......meant to look up what that means. And Venus was so bright.Did you turn over your money when you saw a new moon Less?Beautiful shot. Very Dickensian Decemberish.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Which I'd not come across before - and as for meaning - let us know when you look it up!Did you turn over your money when you saw a new moon Less?Oh, something else I didn't know... but that wasn't a New Moon
... Thinks...
aha, think I get it...And, I have finally found out how to insert comments inbetween bits of a quote, or rather how to quote without having to Quote, IYKWIM....6 -
Yes you should turn your money over while looking at the new moon. Not sure what specs do for that but I took mine off
and it should increase the amount in the coming months so my Grandmother said.
You should also not take your first look at the new moon though glass.Seeing the rest of the moon shaded is called 'Earthshine' - how lovely is thatI can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I'm very jealous of those drinking hot chocolate - it really sounds delicious. Gallbladder removal and total intolerance for fat means they are off limits for me (unless I want to deal with the consequences)
I wish we had a sculpture park or something similar close to us Dusty - it seems to provide you with endless pics and inspiration as well as exercise.Sorry, I missed your post, like I missed Farway's yesterday. Glad you're on the mend now. It's a real swizz when illness strikes in the holidays.Your photo shows how magnificent and sculptural wind turbines can look. I don't mind them in the right setting; better than acres of plastic panels.
I know someone with the no fat diet for the same reason. They squeeze in a Lidl plain chocolate butter biscuit now and again, without repercussions, but that's about it.The sculptures at Rosemoor keep interest going through the darker months. They're very varied, but mostly not as avant-garde as those that used to be at a local hotel, which had a many sculptures and installations in its grounds. Sadly, it's closed now. There are also some pretty weird creations in the Forest of Dean, like staircases and railway lines that go nowhere. Our kids used to love searching for those. One of them went on to make some strange installations herself, and now she does it professionally, but in a controlled and conventional manner! No more clothes for trees!Farway, I'm not sure what the feet represent either, but one of them looks to have a bad case of hammer toe!Oversize artefacts are the kind of art works kids love, but those don't seem to offer much play potential.
I like the atmosphere in your night vision shot, Less, but I agree the moon looks very different from the sliver I observed at dusk, "Hrumph!" I said, "I'll leave that to the folk with fancy phones..." and there it is.Although we started off several degrees below 2p here, things improved, so I was outside most of the day. I finished-off my 3rd cold frame made from scrap and stuck it in position so it would begin warming the soil. In the afternoon, I carried on processing the willows that fell, and bagging the brash from Pre-Christmas hedgerow cutting. It was tedious, but the sunshine was lovely. There are still some days of prep ahead before I can cut the logs and bonfire the rest.
I'll close with another photo taken through the frame they move around at Rosemoor. I don't like the new bridge pictured. It's too angular. The frame is beside the older wooden bridge, not far off, so I'm not sure why a second one was thought necessary."Everything's just f.....ine!"7 -
I was sure I'd posted this morning - must have dreamt it.
wort, I just take photos of the aurora with my phone - it's an iphone 15 pro max. I do really want a fancy camera though.
W_M, sorry to hear you've had the lurgy. Lovely sunrise photos.
Dusty, I knew you'd know the mountainI decided to delete the pic this morning.
Re the swearies, I think I'm becoming more intolerant as I get older, I think I need to work on being a nicer person. Naughty words only pop out when I think no one can hear though
I'll try the demerara sugar for the gammon, Farway, thanks. I'm guessing it tastes a bit like honey roast ham when it's cooked??
twopenny, I agree that bulbs are wonderful
I wasn't sure if it was Jupiter or Venus, Less. The aurora people said Jupiter, but then another group said Venus. I'A watched potato will never chit'...5 -

Just been looking at it more closely this evening - there's a section which shows you which planets are visible, and when and where, from any location (YBE might enjoy this bit as a change from looking at weather forecasts from obscure locations), and you can move the planets back and forth to see the direction they were in at a particular time during the current day (tho I couldn't work out how to go back to yesterday to be certain...). Looks like there are other fun bits to play around with, including an interactive night sky map...

I was cut off in my prime yesterday
Definitely Venus, Less...

Morning all from a very cold and frosty Shawshank Patch :brrr: Warmer than it was, apparently - only -3 rather than -7. So that's nice.
My no swearing didn't last long either pp, people at work (customers, not staff) are unbelievableLucky me and Big Boss Man have got a good rapport cos I've had my first complaint
I need to be careful obviously, but the bare bones of it are - a woman rang on the monday before Christmas asking for a quote cos she wants to move house. I said one will be sent in the post but please be patient as it's christmas and it'll take a bit longer to reach you. She rang yesterday morning, absolutely raging that she'd had to spend christmas with all her stuff in boxes cos she thought she'd be in her new house by New Year! Yes really. So she's put in an official complaint against me, she's maintaining I told her she'd be moved so it's my fault. Yes really. Big Boss Man thought that was hilarious, apparently I now hold the record for quickest complaint
(All our calls are recorded so it's not an issue.) So that was a good start to the new year eh
I'm with wort, I always think those sheep are drawn on afterwards too Dusty. Do they light up? Are they some sort of a solar/neon something or other? What are you doing tipping up? Was it due to over-imbibing...?
I did sausages n onions n stuff in my slow cooker pp but I often do the gammon+coke thing. I add carrots to it though, big carrots chopped into 3 (v chunky) and lay them on the bottom, then gammon on top. They go sort of smushy and sweet, bluddy lovely they are
I don't know what spaghetti squash is but woohoo for free seeds Arb
Beautiful dawn pics wm, yeah we do have good skies round here eh. I wonder what's in the mystery package.... Even though you've broken the back of the lurgy now, if R0me0 is too much for you I'll take him
How big are the giant hammer toes tootsies Farway? If they're big enough to sit on it could be the start of a new sitooterie category *nodding* What bulbs have you got coming up 2p? I've stuff coming up but I can't remember what I planted where ha haa! "Earthshine" I love that #ThingsWotMakeMyHeartSmile
Your Dickensian pic is a belter Less, I'd have that as a screensaver or summat, it's beautiful
I'll look up the timeanddate website, that sounds like good fun
And it'll give my brain something to think about, other than how I'd rather be in Kyrenia where it's 15'c currently, which is 14' warmer than it is here
I've got some good starry night pics, but I'll not put them up if it'll coax Bertigo back so can I have a ruling please pp? They've got roof lines in them so they're definitely 'looking up' rather than flat itms.
Edit - timeanddate is pure brilliant, thanks very much LessI removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.8 -
Very frosty start, but at least it's just dull & dry. Could be rain this evening but no one seems to be sure, maybe the breeze dries out the seaweed too quickly?pink_poppy said:wort, I just take photos of the aurora with my phone - it's an iphone 15 pro max. I do really want a fancy camera though.
I'll try the demerara sugar for the gammon, Farway, thanks. I'm guessing it tastes a bit like honey roast ham when it's cooked??I've just bought a second hand Nikon D300 & one lens, it has more knobs on than a space shuttle, I've only just fired it up, so time will tell. The point I'm trying to make is I now have nearly £2000 worth of gear for around £150, so fancy need not mean breaking the bank if you don't want the very latest fashionNot sure if I can get a photo as nice as Less' night shot, that is a great one.Yesterday morning I saw the crescent moon through the trees, and I was hoping for the same shot this morning, but too cloudy for that, typical now I have a camera to try out.
The demerara ham is sort of Honey roast taste, I did the same as YBE, some big chunks of carrot in the base for ham to sit on, then covered in water to cook. The hammer toed feet are big enough to sit on, but too low for old bones to do soT & M offer time, some seeds reduced to 89P. I've looked, but nothing for me, conveniently skipping by the aquilegias & radishes.
Didn't someone mention chillies? Some seeds there, as are peas, beans, toms & pumpkins etcoffer ends midnight, 5th January 2025 or while stocks last. Normal delivery charges apply. Use order code TM_TN5542W

The sheep are metal, I think. There are similar pieces representing dogs, and another animal I can't remember, but they didn't work so well IMO.I fall over because I'm no longer supple in the leg department and don't always pick my feet up as far as I should, especially in wellies, essential at this time of year. A body moving forward tends to keep going, even when a foot, or feet, get trapped in long grass etc, so the outcome's inevitable! My reactions are still quick, though, so it's usually only my pride that's injured. Anyway, I'm built like the proverbial brick $h1_- house!Whoops!
Look what you almost made me do there!

) but demerara sugar, and some of those Christmas carrots I'm feeding the hens, would be fine. We have a half price joint in the freezer, so I'll suggest it to Mrs Dusty.
She won't take any notice, but I'll have tried.....
Weather update. Cold, but not below zero now, and sleet on the way. Then rain; lots of it. Look out Mr Canute! My favourite bird; small and feisty! But hey, I saw a Goldcrest on New Year's Day in our wee wood. That's a first for us.
