Sounds like you are being unreasonable.
Judging by the OP's post, I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion as the OP has clearly stated it was a family emergency and that in anyones books takes priority and Covid knows no boundaries. With BSM being a big outfit, at the very least the co could help out or at least comprimise to an extent where OP is not being messed about.
    ATB
The OP needed to give more than 48hrs notice. The OP didn't. Can it be any more clearer?
OP clearly mentioned emergency  family situation and Covid, it can't be more clear than that. I'm with the OP.
You may be with the OP but the OP will not be getting a refund.
The Driving instructor has reserved that slot for the OP
The OP has asked the instructor to be available and the instructor made themself available and as a result deserves to be paid
I am going to Snowdonia on Friday and have non refundable Hotel Booking
If Gwynedd  is locked down by then  should I expect the Hotel to refund?
NO Because I booked the room on the basis that I would not get a refund unless they canceled
BTW I imagine you have never run a business as you know that you would probably  go bust if you ran it as you suggest the driving instructor should.

    Hi
I hear you and in ordianry circumstance and the example you gave, I'd side with the driving school/etc. However, 'family emergency' was cited by the OP and 'Covid' and though it was not exactly 24 hours, it was pretty close and IMHO, goodwill should have been shown, ie more than what was offered.
    HTH

But the instructor HAS shown goodwill, in offering a free lesson.
Also the notice period in the OP was stated as 48 hours not the 24 hours in the post you quoted.
  • I bought a scratch card at the weekend and didn't win.

I was thinking of asking for another scratch card... For free, since the one I bought didn't win.
I mean, there isn't a specific T&C that says word for word if you don't win you can't have another free of charge.

Theyre so unreasonable though. They wouldn't entertain my request.

Given the definition of philanthropy why don’t you pay the Op the cost of the lesson - you clearly see them as a “good cause”.  Practice what you preach.

Being the philanthropist that you are, anyone that needs to put bread on their families table that gives someone a refund for non refundable service will have their fees paid by you.

Do that and you will be a seasoned and respected philanthropist.

Indeed he did, but the instructor then "messed about" the OP.

How is that the definition of messed around? He requested one date which didn’t suit. And given it was a free lesson I don’t think he can really complain that much.

Alongside the claim be be “The” not “A” unless they are suggesting there is only one in the world and they are it
