Sounds like you are being unreasonable.
Judging by the OP's post, I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion as the OP has clearly stated it was a family emergency and that in anyones books takes priority and Covid knows no boundaries. With BSM being a big outfit, at the very least the co could help out or at least comprimise to an extent where OP is not being messed about.
    ATB
The OP needed to give more than 48hrs notice. The OP didn't. Can it be any more clearer?
OP clearly mentioned emergency  family situation and Covid, it can't be more clear than that. I'm with the OP.
So the op gets covid and the driving instructor has to loose money because of it? Are you for real? Is he a philanthropist too?
Did you not note the deal the instructor offered as the person knew that Covid is impacting most people.
"is he a philanhtropist,"  why would I know if he is or not?
Do you know what philanthropy is? He would be giving away his wage. The OP has not complied with their part of the contract in line with the agreed terms and conditions. The DI has been more than reasonable to offer another lesson for gratis. It is black and white, it really is that simple.
You asked me mate if the driving instructor was one just a bit earlier so I passed your question back to you.
If it was a "clear" as you claim why would the OP pose the question?
The answer to the question is clear cut, it's just the OP was hoping to find away to get their money back despite not abiding by the Ts&Cs

How are you not following this? Must be a wind up surely?
Also if it isn't clear then why is it the agreed contract?

Why, just because you don't agree with the OP's question/concerns does not make the OP a "wind up."
I've said everything I've needed to say on this and in my judgement the OP has asked a genuine question.

No, you and your lack of comprehension is the wind up. Surely? The op is chancing their arm and why not, i would, however they are on a hiding to nothing. Its extremely simple a question. Then you came along...
You keep feeding it and it will be sleeping in your bed soon.

..don't really know why this is even a thread?....
You buy a service and the T&Cs say no refund if cancelled within 48 hrs of this service being provided, you cancel within 48 hours so no refund?...what is there to discuss?
    .."It's everybody's fault but mine...."

You may be with the OP but the OP will not be getting a refund.
The Driving instructor has reserved that slot for the OP
The OP has asked the instructor to be available and the instructor made themself available and as a result deserves to be paid
I am going to Snowdonia on Friday and have non refundable Hotel Booking
If Gwynedd  is locked down by then  should I expect the Hotel to refund?
NO Because I booked the room on the basis that I would not get a refund unless they canceled
BTW I imagine you have never run a business as you know that you would probably  go bust if you ran it as you suggest the driving instructor should.

    Hi
I hear you and in ordianry circumstance and the example you gave, I'd side with the driving school/etc. However, 'family emergency' was cited by the OP and 'Covid' and though it was not exactly 24 hours, it was pretty close and IMHO, goodwill should have been shown, ie more than what was offered.

But the instructor HAS shown goodwill, in offering a free lesson.

If they do it for one person they would have to do it for everyone! Goodwill doesn’t pay the bills!!! Have a little bit of common sense will you.
