This thread seems to have gone quiet for a while but the issue continues. Citibank just advised me they are closing all "UK" current accounts - unless you are mega rich - been an account holder of theirs for forty years whilst resident in Jersey and now France. Got modest NS&I holdings, use a foreign exchange outfit for good rates, just need a UK based sterling current account for a few direct debits and standing orders and a debit card, no overdraft facilities or savings products needed. Any suggestions?
If you're based in France, you can apply for a UK current account online with HSBC UK
  • Surely HSBC and Santander are fairly safe options currently.
Note : Santander in the UK is a different bank to the Spanish Santander.

The Channel Islands (and IOM) were never part of the UK.
This would be an added complication to your quest for the 'UK' current account.

Accounts with CI and IoM branches of UK banks usually provide UK direct debit and standing order facilities and GBP debit cards, so would be suitable for Brittanyboy's requirements in that respect. However, account fees unless there's a substantial amount deposited may be the reason why he doesn't already have a Jersey-based account.
