  • ....and whist you are happy to settle for less reminding yourself that there are millions who are less privileged, I opt to ask Q : I am given a choice to upgrade further, but the Landlord says "No", so can I do anything about it? simple! The answer to my question is either "Yes" or "No". And it seems the answer is "No". Besides that, all extra fluff about what I should have considered "BEFORE" buying the property and your opinion about FTTP deals I am looking for is irrelevant and I dont care about here!

Yes indeed, you should remind yourself that there are millions out there who are less privileged than you - without any form of FTTP. You've been told repeatedly that there is diddly squat you can do if your freeholder refuses to give permission to Hyperopic.

Btw I'm on a FTTP 1 Gig TalkTalk line (Openreach based) so I know just how nice it is to have the fastest speeds:

  • Congratulations! So a person on 1Gig FTTP giving me his opinion that there are millions less privileged than me and his heart bleeds that I am trying to upgrade from 120MB to 500MB is pure classic! That absolutely made my day. Btw, may be you should have told yourself the same story before upgrading your internet to 1Gig !

But I'm not the one moaning about having to pay for the fastest speed (£72/m) on FTTP. My response was to "you are happy to settle for less".
For the millionth time: you ALREADY have FTTP. If you want faster speeds than 120 Mbps then stop penny pinching and pay for it on the OFNL network (up to 1 Gig)  Why is that so difficult to understand?

There is a fair chance that all this ‘debate’ is moot anyway, as the building already has a FTTP provider ( leaving aside the perceived value of its products ) , and given that (AFAIK) a large part of HO decision to serve a MDU building is based on it’s residents committing to taking HO service, then if ( for example ) 60% need to  commit to taking HO, (even if the building landlord had no objection , and didn’t demand some sort of payment)  , that figure could be hard to achieve, given that presumably quite a few residents will be happy with what they already have and not necessarily keep to spend £100 or whatever HO charge for an install.....it’s quite likely HO won’t even consider providing in a building that has another FTTP provider already.

well Highland76, you still dont get my point but I cant help if you are happy to compromise and settle for less in your life! thats your choice and I am happy for you. Let me put it another way (but tbh reading your comments now am sure you still dont get my point!). Hypothetically,  you are offered a Fiat punto for £8k and for a same price a Ferarri (pick model of your choice!). But you landlord says you can only park Punto not the Ferarri in the parking. What is your take on that ? ( I am sure you will opt for Punto, who would want a Ferarri isnt it ? congrats on your choice!)    p.s (try reading my comments before passing yours- I have made it clear "And I agree that many would love to be in my shoe and as I am not complaining about the money either so downgrading to lower speed to save money is out of question")
Well currently you have a package that provides a speed of 120Mbps but your line is capable providing a speed of 1Gbps if you changed to a different provider and pay more.
So actually your currently compromising and settling for less by choosing a speed of 120Mbps and saving money when you could get a much faster speed and pay more.

  • Hi, I’ve just successfully had hyperoptic installed to our block of flats in Scotland and have just read through this post. There are some confusing things that make Scottish flats a little different to England, firstly we don’t usually have freehold and leasehold like down in England, if you own a flat you own the communal space jointly with every other flat. Legally these communal spaces need to managed by a management company or factor, a factor can be created by the residents or one can be appointed. It’s the factors responsibility to insure that the common parts of the property are kept maintained including common infrastructure such as satellites, phone lines, broadband, gas and electricity. A lot of the time a factor will just grant other companies access to add there own infrastructure such as BT, Sky etc.

A Hyperoptic install requires a leased line from openreach to the basement of your property, hyperoptic then install their own fibre or cabling into the cupboards outside each property (this is usually where gas, electricity comes into the flat). When they install into the flat they drill a small hole above your door and run the cable from the cupboard to the first available power outlet in your flat. They would no be required to touch any other infrastructure at any point.

I think at this point the best thing you could do is get all your neighbours together and try to convince them why this would be a good thing (competition + cheaper broadband etc) and then organise a meeting with your factor to discuss.
I’ve been in 1 property before that the very last resort was to vote for the removal of our factor and appoint a new one that would actually do what we asked for.
