Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay to replace the sink I damaged?

  • I think you should pay. These days, offering amateur help is a risky business. You open yourself to civil action if things go wrong. Professionals pay significantly to insure themselves against mishap. Kindly meant, I'm sure. You probably won't do it again.
  • Possibly offer to pay (but not insist) but not expect to pay.  Your friend would have had to pay probably a few hundred pounds (if the plumbers are anything like the ones around here!) to do what you have done for material prices only. So I would expect your friend to pay for the chipped basin.  This should be a test on just how good a friend he is!!

Nobody has mentioned that your friend should have household insurance to claim for the damage.
If a claim is made which involves payment of an excess, then pay that.   You admit you broke it, the decent thing to do is pay if your friend does not have insurance.  I am not a lawyer but I think there is a clause in my own household insurance policy covering me for accidental damage to property not in my own home.  Under the "Public liability" section.
There are people on here who will no doubt know the answer to that point better than I do.
Honestly, why is this even a dilemma?  If you replace the sink at your expense and your friend can claim on insurance then you get your money back.
I tend to agree with those who have said you offered to do the work, therefore you are liable for damage.  Hopefully your plumbing does not spring a leak causing expensive damage.  You don't say if you are a professional plumber in your question.  If you are, then you should be insured for damage.

I agree OP should pay but why should the 'friend' use their no claims bonus and claim on insurance thats not fair

  • This isn't a plumbing or amateur help problem - its an everyday problem where you accidentally damaged your neighbours property. There is no question that you should pay for it - you were negligent in dropping it. The fact that you are helping out or that you are not a professional is not the point. You volunteered your services and you damaged their property - no question you MUST pay for YOUR mistake.

Do not pay. Your "friend" is abusing your generosity. Not one penny.
  • Yes of course.
  • Find a Kitchen Company Replacing a Household and you can get the Old Units they are removing if they are suitable.

  • You broke it, you pay for it. Why should they be out of pocket for your clumsiness.
  • Of course you should pay. Is it fair that your friend should be out of pocket for your mistake?
  • i'd offer to pay, then hope they refuse, or offer 50/50
