Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay to replace the sink I damaged?

  • If it's a friend offering help (i.e. not getting paid) then I might offer a contribution if I could afford it.  But there shouldn't be any expectation (unless you did it deliberately, which it doesn't sound like).  Isn't your friend insured?
  • To me there is no question. Whilst it was kind of you to offer help , and of course it was an accident, BUT you broke it so without doubt ( in my opinion ) you should replace it.
I would have immediately offered when it happened as I would have felt guilty, accident or not.
  • Of course you should pay for it.  My brother is a builder and sometimes accidents happen, things get broken, but he always replaces items he accidentally breaks.  It’s the right thing to do!
  • Pay up or replace.
  • If you value your friendship then yes, although if you even have to ask this question I am guessing you are not close. In which case, no and kiss goodbye to them :)

I also have to say that I'd not be happy about 'amateur plumbing' since there are rules and regs about that kind of thing.
    No there aren't!
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • It feels like a very British answer but ..... my expectation is that you should offer to pay and apologise profusely, they should politely decline your offer, so you ask again and they decline trying to show as much as grace as possible and hide the fact that they are clearly livid and actually want you to pay but can’t say that.  This should continue for some time ....
This is exactly what i would expect too, and so British...

Absolutely do not pay for the replacement under any circumstances. I can't believe anyone thinks you should.

If all had gone well, as you were working for nothing your friend would have saved a large amount of money.  As he gains the benefit, he should take the risk..

    Obvious isn't it!

I hate people who confuse good intentions with the consequences of their actions. The two can exist in tandem with each other, it is not an either/or situation.

Your friend asked/you offered to do some DIY, not to break things. If your actions led to a breakage, then that's something you need to bear responsibility for, even if it was an accident or your intentions were good.
