Personally I'd be calling her bluff-  I can't tolerate this level of immaturity from my children - let alone a partner. The tears and manipulation would have got to me long ago. 

Ordinarily this would not be the case with the inlaws but Mrs Alt has always confided and involved her parents despite her age and they have provided rock solid support for Alt during his recovery. That dynamic is why there is a recommendation to share so they know what's going on when Alt appears to be struggling.

Regarding PIL they became very supportive once they had both sides of the history and the inter family dynamics have improved tremendously.

There are some behaviours that will still benefit from the parental input as most adults grow out of them by their teens/20's
