You situation was against the current advice anyway.
Indoors it was only meant to be people from up to two households (plus a support bubble if applicable), so three households indoors was against the guidance.
I don't know all the rules of support bubbles, but if you are a single parent you could say that you have a support bubble with your parents, then your situation is broadly OK, see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/making-a-support-bubble-with-another-household
Current advice was what you "should" do, the only legally enforceable part was gatherings of over 30 people. Now the rule of 6 will be legally enforceable.

Yes but if that is what should be done then it can be expected to become what has to be done.

The only people who were previously following advice but are affected by the change are two households each of four people, that would have been OK under previous advice of up to two households, but is now not because its over six people.

In the OPs case where it was three households it was against the advice anyway, unless they are a single person forming a support bubble.

Unfortunately it’s up to people to find their own solutions. The Government cannot cover every angle. Simply impossible. Decisions will have to be made and the consequences lived with. Legislation is in place to deal with the much wider abuse of the Liberty allowed. As long as people put themselves before community Covid will continue to do the rounds.

OP, does the hotel of your grandparents operate at 100% capacity?
Simply "book a room" a month at a time, get your grandparents to charge you £1 per night so it is a legitimate business transaction, your kids spent as much time in the hotel room as possible. Your sister does the same.
  • Using the hotel like that is not possible.
The property is separated into 2 parts. Business in the front, pleasure in the rear. ( that sounds wrong)
it also won’t help the next person in the same position.
If I follow the letter of the law, I’m better off not working as childcare will cost more than I earn.
It seems so wrong that the government is changing the rules which in turn force me to risk a fine greater than I earn, or pay childcare costs of greater than I earn. Or simply stop working and then not be eligible for benefits for 3 months...  just frustrating...
  • All other suggestions other than those already given will result in you having to pay for childcare.

I really dont see how one room could be "booked" and the older children of the seven could use it as a base. Be creative.
  • You might think differently if it was your livelihood and you were legally required to operate a covid secure business.

Is having three children in a hotel room against the regulations? I don't know the answer to this btw.

Anyway, those are the options: do something stated in this thread, pay for childcare, or quietly break the rules (which seemingly you may have already been doing anyway)

Under the current advice no more than two households should have been meeting indoors, unless a single parent support bubble was formed.
If you are happy going against the current advice then the only major difference is there is now the chance of a fine.

Realistically if you keep yourselves to yourselves and don't do anything that causes the police to attend you will never get fined anyway and you don't need to worry.

Its up to you whether you think you are putting your grandparents at risk of catching covid.
  • To those saying “you’ve been breaking the rules along” please don’t forget that it’s been summer holidays for 2 months and before that we were in lockdown.
