Do you think it's just the possible access of their eBay account while staying here that might have triggered this? (I haven't raised this with them yet.) Or could logging into their PayPal also have done it?

I would have thought they would have to had something dodgy/negative going on with their account.  I don’t think just logging on to multiple healthy accounts would be a problem. I have 4 eBay accounts all accessed through the same IP addresses.
Just logging in isn’t a problem at all, after all it is perfectly Ok to have several eBay accounts for the same person. Permanent suspension is usually for when there has been serious fraud, attempts to deceive or just poor account management , or occasionally where something shows up during verification that causes concern. A minor misdemeanour would usually only result in a warning (often called a strike) and a possible restriction for a few days. You will find several of us regulars on here have received warnings for minor issues , I have had one for listing a fruit knife , another for listing a military item that eBay didn’t like and one where a buyer wanted to buy something and asked for my address and I got a warning for attempting to sell off eBay. So far, fingers crossed, I’ve not been restricted.

Yes, there's usually a rational explanation behind the irrationality. I'm not sure how you approach someone to ask if they may be responsible for you being banned on Ebay though. It may work to approach from the other way, ie ask if they used Ebay while they were with you as your account may have been compromised and that has had a knock on effect to your kids, so they may also have been affected. That might not get exactly to the bottom of it but may help.

Actually that is exactly what I have just done .. tricky .. but thanks. Waiting to hear back.
  • Nothing at all to report from our house guests. They did use our Wi-Fi but no more than your normal internet browsing. I just don't know where to look next for the answer. Hopefully the SAR will shine some light when it comes back. The longer this goes on, the more intrigued we become. I suppose eBay can just ban people, but I really would love to know what prompted it.
  • Thank you to everyone who has gone to the trouble to try and help. We remain as baffled as ever and realise we may never know what triggered this apparently lifelong ban.
  • Just to add that most devices have a "burned in address", or MAC address which can identify a particular machine, phone, netbook, whatever. So a security system can cross reference logins from an IP address (your router) and the actual devices used. So an example; I wouldn't want to buy a device off an eBay scammer and plug it in my router and log into my account.

Thank you so much for your comment. We've been on a very steep learning curve here and are trying to get to grips with how this all works... Would you be able to explain how this might have caused our current situation please? We were wondering what sort of thing our guests would have had to have been doing previously through their phones/iPads, to set the red bells ringing with eBay when they used our IP address? Sorry to come back to you for an elaboration, thanks very much. Maybe this will lead to an explanation...? I wonder if the SAR will reveal any of this information? (I understand we might need to wait for a month for the SAR results to come back to us.)
  • So in a nutshell, an actual device contains a uniquely identifiable address. If a fraudster used a different eBay account to other eBay accounts you are aware of on a borrowed the device from your children, that device is then logged as being linked to the fraudster.
You can see in this circumstance in particular why the staff at eBay aren't allowed to discuss it with you as it just provides a checklist to any potential fraudster.

  • As I mentioned previously too, if you didn’t submit proof of ID and address with the SAR you could be waiting longer than a month because they will write back to you asking for this. They have to make sure it’s you asking for the information and no one else.
