Have you or your daughter logged on to your eBay accounts whilst using someone else’s Wi-fi connection at a different address? Or has anyone else logged on to their eBay account whilst connected to your Wi-fi? Friends or family?1
-
Now that is very possible. I very probably logged on to eBay through my eBay app on my phone, using someone else's wifi, during the last couple of months. Could that really be it?? It's something I might do anywhere - on the train, in a cafe etc, if I was bidding on something ...
I have just checked all my eBay messages to see if there was any request to confirm my account details, and there is nothing.
Thank you for trying to help.0 -
We had family using our house in August while we were away. I guess it's possible they could have used our wifi to log on to eBay on their phone .. but is this getting a bit tenuous?0

Ah. It may be possible then that someone gained access, effectively 'hacked' your account (and changed the e-mail address for the time they used it) without you knowing. By eBay messages, do you mean on eBay itself or the e-mail notifications of messages? (I don't know if you can access your account info on eBay itself at all. Even if you are able to see messages on eBay, anyone else using the account would likely have deleted any relevant messages for you still not to see them.dysynni said:Now that is very possible. Oh crikey! And eBay would just assume that the hacker was me. Is there any way to get them to look into this I wonder? (You would have thought they might have done so to start with). That is scary. Do you mean that this would have happened when I logged on using someone else's wifi? (I only used the wifi in another family member's house, and possibly a cafe.) You would think that, if this is the case, eBay might consider this a possibility and be prepared to believe me. Does this mean it's not safe to use the app other than in your own home??
Yes I can access my account still and have checked through all emails from eBay. Nothing of note.0 -
I doubt it was hacked as there would have most likely been obvious signs. I was thinking more along the lines that you’ve used the same Wi-fi as someone else who’s eBay account has been suspended and eBay have assumed you are linked to them by virtue of using the same IP address (this would only be via a Wi-fi connection, not 3G or 4G data).
I have an eBay business account and all visitors to my house are strictly not allowed to log in to their eBay accounts if they use our Wi-fi. Equally my staff are not allowed to use their personal eBay accounts in our office.1 -
Yes this; rather than being hacked (which is unlikely in this scenario). If you have anyone (or your daughter has anyone) that uses the wifi/computer and accesses their ebay or Paypal then the accounts will be backwards-linked (backward meaning after the event) - and this is the same if you or your daughter access someone elses wifi/computer to use ebay/Paypal. Whatever THEY do after that affects your account too.noitsnotme said:I doubt it was hacked as there would have most likely been obvious signs. This is so helpful, thank you very much. I would never have thought of this. I have messaged eBay to ask them to check whether the 'risky activity' took place during the week that our guests were here. I doubt they will give me any information, but perhaps this might be the key to resolving this situation. Thank you.0

I initially was thinking of someone gaining the details (from unsecured public wifi) and using OP's account for nefarious purposes (not 'hacked' per se, more 'unauthorised access') but actually this sounds much more likely - and it's not something I knew about before. Sobering!theonlywayisup said:

Sobering indeed. I hope I will hear back from eBay with confirmation or otherwise, though my recent experience of trying to gain some insight into the situation does not fill me with optimism.0
