I wouldn’t think 75p would justify this many posts!
It was a mistake by the cashier but hardly a massive issue and the OP has some responsibility for not checking what they were paying.Personally i would think that if money was so tight that donating 75p to charity caused financial hardship then I would expect you to take greater care to ensure you were being charged the correct value.1 -

1. The cashier is suppose to ask the customer if they wish to donate to the charities and explain the process.2. It is not company policy to automatically opt the customer into it.
3. Tesco is made up of people and some will make mistakes.
4. If a customer has been opted in automatically they can either complain to the store manager or if they feel it’s theft they can go to the police if they want. They can also not shop at Tesco anymore. It is really not that complicated and on the list of challenges we face in society this is not one of them.
Let me guess, "First World Problems"?
Apologists like you make me sick.As it stands Tesco, Police and Government and supporting customers don’t see a problem with this initiative to help charities so your gonna have to make that “apologist label” for a lot of people after you recover from being sick.0 -
Some of the answers here are truly amazing. Yes. We are talking about a small amount and it seems clear it is not Tesco policy to take the money without seeking permission however on at least some occasions they seem to have done so. Perhaps the training was not very good. Tesco had in store three Perspex boxes and you could put a plastic chip in the one of your choice if you wished them to make a contribution to a local charity. All clear and above board. This has been suspended during the time of Covid-19.
I don't think Tesco (or any other shop) should be doing this because
a. it annoys some and is a bit of an own goal when presumably they want us to feel warmly about them
b. Many people(including me) wish to choose which charity they give money to or indeed whether they wish to contribute at all
c. seeking to guilt trip people into contributing (assuming they do ask) is the wrong thing to do IMO.0 -

Even if they were the only shop in the uk some people will not be happy that they are taking money without asking.0
