How did the boat viewing go?
It was a lot longer than we expected, we have only just got home, but it does seem to have gone very well. He did really like the boat and has gone home to consider his offer which sounds promising.

He knows we have an asking price offer on the table so that is out in the open.

Panelling looks really good, like it a lot. Didn't expect it to be contemporary tbh but it's absolutely perfect for the age of the property. Could bring another colour in with mirror etc. Turquoise blue or something maybe.

Fingers crossed re boat. Sounds like you're not going to have any trouble seeing it though so no luck needed.

Monday seems to have come around quick.

£50 has been sent to the ISA this morning. Other than this and the usual 1st of the month bills it will be a no spends day today.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be from stores. Breakfast was a sausage sandwich, the other half has taken his packed lunch to work, i'm having some cold meat, cheese and crackers for my lunch and dinner tonight will be pork in black bean sauce using up the leftovers from yesterdays roast dinner.

    Today's jobs include:
    • working from home
    • load of washing
    • vacuuming the house
    • dusting the house
    • watering the plants
    • walking the dog x 2
If I am honest we are both finding this boat selling a bit stressful. Oddly much more so than when selling our house. I can see the benefits of letting a broker deal with the potential buyers but their costs are astronomical at 10% of the purchase price!

    Thank you.

We have ordered a very plain and simple frameless mirror for in there. That should hopefully be here on Thursday so a job for the weekend fitting that.

Also got most of the light fitting ordered so again another job for the weekend. I think we have found the shelf that we want in there as well. Just need to measure the length that we need and decide on the colour.

Ha at 10% fees maybe I should get into the boat business. 😆

I don’t think you’re going to have much an issue selling the boat by the sounds of it tbh you’ve not had it up for sale for long and already a full asking price offer.

Frameless mirror should work well. Some sort of floating shelf too.

It is indeed a floating shelf we are looking at. A nice chunky piece of wood.

The 10% fee is just the start of the trouble with boat sales. Brokers pretty much insist that the buyers have a survey even on cheaper older boats. The surveys are really harsh and survey them like they are a new boat with no consideration to the age of the boat. The brokers then get their work shops to provide a top price quote for the work required and then that quote is used to get loads more money knocked off the price of the boat.

Its a racket really but not much you can do about it if you go through the brokers.

Some friends of ours sold their boat like ours about 18 months ago. Theirs was a bit newer than ours and was up for sale for £37k. The survey "found" £10k of works required so they agreed on a sale price of £26k then the brokers took their £2.6k from that which left them with £23.5k from a boat initially up for sale for £37k.

We have priced our boat knowing that there are a few bits that need work. So we are hoping that the honest and up front approach means we find someone who doesn't want to survey it!

There was an article about a boom in boat sales on the BBC news this morning. I think anything to do with selling is stressful, it’s rarely straightforward.

@RelievedSheff makes a bit more sense now you’ve explained re boat survey/ brokers etc. I initially wondered why you were so opposed to the survey though tbh surely any buyer expects being an older boat it is going to require some expenditure and speak to the surveyor about what work is urgent and what can wait or doesn’t work like that? Tool to renegotiate yeah but can’t expect to renegotiate the full cost of the repair works as I imagine in relatively few cases that the cost of repairs reflect the diminution in value in their entirety.

If it is surveyed we know that they will throw the book at it despite it being 18 years old and we will walk away with a lot less than we should.

We just have to hope that one of the three interested parties decides not to survey. It is priced right to be able to buy it not surveyed.
