Allegations by a passenger on the flight on lunchtime BBC News saying that mask wearing and correct mask wearing were not enforced on the TUI Zante to Cardiff flight yesterday.

"A flight from Zante which left nearly 200 people facing two weeks' self-isolation was a "debacle" and a "free-for-all", passengers say.

One traveller said the Tui flight was full of "covidiots" and "inept crew who couldn't care less". Another claimed there "wasn't much" policing of rules."

I suspect a lot of flights are like this, they just wont make the news.
  • Yes, adherence to the rules will be far from consistent going by these reports.
Some people seem to think they are fireproof from cross contimination.

I've yet to be on a flight anything like this.  The worst I have encountered was a very disorganised Naples airport, even then everyone had to wear masks, the check in woman even chased a man across the tarmac when he took his off after leaving the building.  But flights, everyone has been compliant, even mostly with the disembarkation by row number, although you do always get the off !!!!!! who thinks they're more important than everyone else.

My favorite airline at the moment is Aer Lingus, they leave all the middle seats empty and check regularly that everyone is wearing a mask.  Other airline could learn a thing or two from them.

Somebody commented on TV this morning that the Zante issues were on an evening flight from a party destination.  Translate as the flight was full of p***ed up youngsters.
  • The worry I have with flying right now is how many of those passengers had Covid symptoms as they embarked the flight? How many more did it transmit to by the time they landed via the air filtration system on board? Ugh- not planning to fly anywhere soon myself but good luck to those who want to.
Several years ago me and OH flew to Boston, USA and I was sure I could smell fumes through the air vents. Husband was fine but I spent most of my holiday with an awful bronchitis type virus and plenty of our money spent in CVS pharmacy.  Put me off flying for ages I can tell you.

    Laganas is Zante's 'party destination'.
I doubt that the flight only had youngsters - drunk or not - on it.
There is only one flight per week on the Cardiff - Zante - Cardiff route.
Lots of passengers of all ages would have been on that flight who had been staying in all sorts of non-party resorts.

I'm not disputing what the person on TV said.
Just disputing the veracity of the statement.

The problem with this is it will vary on every single flight depending on the passengers and the crew.  The crew are the only people that can enforce it, I can imagine it is difficult to get the balance right.  The ultimate is as someone else said, land and kick people off who are refusing to comply.  It very quickly would become incredibly expensive and impractical for airlines though.

One thing for sure, I'm sure TUI will have their house in order after the kicking they're getting in the press.

I'm not suggesting that all the passengers fitted the profile I mentioned and shouldn't have used 'full', but it would only take a couple of dozen out of 200ish for it to be very difficult for cabin crew to control effectively.

And that's probably all it was.
I've been on flights from places with party destinations, including Zante, Rhodes - Faliraki (although they've cleaned that up a lot), Crete - Malia, Corfu - Kavos and the number of drunken youngsters on our flights have been very much in the minority.

The press in Plymouth reported that 30 students from there returned from Zante a couple of weeks ago and 11 subsequently tested positive. I fear this latest story will push Greece into the 'do not travel' arena later this week, its infection rate is 28.85, well over the supposed limit of 20. Poor Portugal has reached 36 so without a miracle in the next 48 hours it is almost certainly off sale again.
