The RBS / NatWest reward card is probably your next best bet for more traditional cards, 0.25% on general spend, 1% on supermarket shop. There are some non mainstream offerings about, if you want to know more PM me.
Very odd this one. I applied and got a Reward current account and then applied for the Reward credit card.
I filled out the hypothetical 'am I eligible?' form and it refused me. Reasons - It said you must be UK resident, Be over 18 and have earn over £10,000 a year. I was clearly in that bracket and in addition had no outgoings (rent/mortgage, loans, school fees etc)
There’s more to it than just that.

Those are lenders basic requirements, their own internal credit scoring is done only on applications that fulfilled basic requirements( as you clearly did too ). That does not mean  - I am in that bracket = I get the product I have applied for .  That means  -  I am in that bracket = I will be credit checked and then lender will decide...

"The fee is due on the 1 year (12 month) anniversary of the card for the following year."
Our AMEX account was opened in July 2016 - the first £25 fee was applied on the 3rd September 2016 statement.

The fee for that year yes.
The fee on the 1 year anniversary is for the next following year - you pay in advance/upfront for the year.

Yes, but I got the impression this was an eligibility test not a application therefore a credit check wasn't taken yet.
I am surprised to be considered ineligible. Never happened to me before.Yes, my income is a lot lower now having retired but my outgoings are low too.
Not sure whether to go ahead an apply to see what happens or get a credit check done myself? I wonder whether having too many cards (unused) may have an impact?

How exactly would you do a credit check on yourself?  Or do you mean check your credit reports which is something different all together.

Even if you have an amazing credit report there's still a chance you could be declined as you simply may not fit the type of borrower the lender is looking for. Also due to the current climate lenders are being more strict with there lending.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

Just to update this thread. Got the Amex card - quick and easy. Got the Nat West reward current account but they refused me a credit card. Rediculous. My credit score is 985 -15 off maximum. I have excellent credit history, not debts, own my house, have a regular income of £20K. Went to the bank to ask in person but it is just a case of computer says no and no one can find out why!

I did apply for a Barclaycard but they want copies of various id sent in by post. I don't have a scanner and I really can't be bothered.

So still looking for a nice reward credit card to compliment the Amex. Wish I was still in Hong Kong. Made £400 a year on my card there! (fees refundable too if requested)

I signed up for an Experian account to see what my credit rating is and if there was anything going against me. I assume the credit card company make their money from retailers fees. Therefore someone with money to spend should be a good proposition for the company. Maybe I am being to simplistic but this is the first time in my life I have been refused credit or a card.

Interestingly, Nat West sent me an email the other day encouraging me to apply for their basic credit card.

Your Experian Score/Rating bears no resemblance on real-life lending decisions, as you’ve discovered.

Barclays require ID and payslips for fraud prevention etc. and it’s pretty common practice with them - what’s the issue with providing what they’ve asked for?
You can use a scanner app on your phone to scan documents.
