Amex is best for UK, especially if you are using it as described above, which is our practice.
There is a modest £25 annual fee, however that can be offset by the cashback accrued over 12 months - paid for 'er indoors yearly car service and MOT, a nice little earner.
Barclaycard Reward is good for holidays abroad - no FX fees at ATMs - as long as balance is paid in full when next monthly statement is due for settlement.
    Or take the free offering.

Unless you’re spending more than £10k per year then there’s little point taking the card that had the fee.
Going by the OP's annual usage explanation he should meet that £10K threshold.

Even so the difference is negligible.
0.25% extra for the sake of £25.

The RBS / NatWest reward card is probably your next best bet for more traditional cards, 0.25% on general spend, 1% on supermarket shop.
Hardly worth it with the £24 annual fee...
Waived if you have a Reward current account, which itself can earn you £3/month with very little effort.
  • Hi,
I was looking at the AmexPlatinum Everday card.  If i was to pay off a holiday balance with this card, would it count towards the cashback ?

    Thanks
    Brian
  • Not sure how accurate Amex webpage is with current rates.
However, going by that data and my basic number crunching - the basic no fee Platinum Cashback Everday CC will produce £300 each anniversary on a £10 grand annual spend - whereas the Platinum Cashback with £25 fee will achieve £500. Therefore, obviously, the latter is a £175 better deal.
Of course, I may be arithmetically challenged  :* - and/or the percentage rates quoted are out of date.

I Have sainsburys credit card and when i use it in sainsburys I get double nectar pionts. so after 2 months or maybe 8 weeks shopping I got enough points for a free shop. I do know, before you point it out, its not actually a free shop! but you get what I mean.

    Yes. Why wouldn’t it?

    No that’s completely wrong.

The Everyday Card will net you £75 on £10,000 spend and the fee-based Card will earn you £100 cashback, then take off the £25 fee making it the same £75 earning.

Indeed, the rates quoted on that webpage have not been updated as I suspected.
Not sure why the German version is coming up now !!!

The rates are as they always have been.

    Everyday Card:
    • Spend £0 to £5,000 and receive 0.5% cashback on purchases
    • Spend over £5,000 and receive 1% cashback on purchases

    Fee Card:
    • Spend £0 to £10,000 and receive 1% cashback on purchases
    • Spend over £10,000 and receive 1.25% cashback on purchases
  • "The rates are as they always have been."
    Always ?
When I opened our Platinum Cashback card in July 2016 the rates were 5% up to £2500 for first three months of membership, and virtually 1.25% on every full pound spent. In the second and consecutive years there was one 2.5% "sweet month" if you had spent more £10,001 + in the previous 12 months.
I can't remember what the virtually restriction covered.
The present cashback rate on warehouse purchase is 0.5% - maybe similar ?
