They, as you have, make mistakes. 
Theirs was missing the damage when it was last booked in, your's for not spotting it before you took delivery.

Erm you clearly haven't considered that they might have charged the last hirer for the damage and not got it repaired in the hope that the next hirer doesn't spot it so they can charge them as well!

Here's a really unlucky Green Motion customer. £2,400 for a clutch which he and he alone burnt out then £400 for a windscreen on the replacement vehicle:

Although he successfully refused to pay. I wonder why GM didn’t try to charge his credit card for the £2,400.

I’ve used numerous car hire companies in the UK and Europe (with no issues). Unfortunately I chose to use Green Motion (Lithuania) and was billed for €800 euros of damage (bonnet dent, door scratch). As everyone has said avoid.........I learnt my lesson although my insurance with AXA covered the cost......however still very unfair.
