That has been mentioned and answered in the first and second page of the threadHomer_home said:
Erm you clearly haven't considered that they might have charged the last hirer for the damage and not got it repaired in the hope that the next hirer doesn't spot it so they can charge them as well!Goudy said:
The damage might have existed and was missed when the car was booked in last, after all you say it was hard to spot.
(It seems odd that they would purposely sting you for something they could have stung the last hirer for)
Then when you've returned it, they noticed it.
They, as you have, make mistakes.
Theirs was missing the damage when it was last booked in, your's for not spotting it before you took delivery.

Here's a really unlucky Green Motion customer. £2,400 for a clutch which he and he alone burnt out then £400 for a windscreen on the replacement vehicle:

Although he successfully refused to pay. I wonder why GM didn’t try to charge his credit card for the £2,400.0

I’ve used numerous car hire companies in the UK and Europe (with no issues). Unfortunately I chose to use Green Motion (Lithuania) and was billed for €800 euros of damage (bonnet dent, door scratch). As everyone has said avoid.........I learnt my lesson although my insurance with AXA covered the cost......however still very unfair.0
