I guess you don't have a dog. Doorbell rings, I get up and make sure lounge and kitchen door closed so dog can't make a run for it when I open front door. Obviously not a problem if you don't have a dog....GDB2222 said:Davesnave said:In the country, you need a boot/drying room, then utility room, then hallway....and even then grass and wood chips from the chain saw end up in the kitchen!
I'm surprised by the answers here, because I'm used to a house where the front door opens straight onto the living room, and it works fine for us. Other people have added a closed-in porch, but we felt no need, as the front door is quite sheltered. We used to live in a small-ish house with a separate hallway, and we'd rather have had the extra living space.2 -
Flooring is largely irrelevant, you can change that as time goes by. The layout is more difficult to put right if you buy a property with a layout that subsequently doesn't work for you.Carl2510 said:What’s people’s opinions on flooring for the kitchen and bathrooms if you had the choice at the same price Vinyl or Tiles?1 -
At the same price tiles but it's aesthetics as both are functional and easy to clean. However unlikely to be the same price as laying tiles takes a lot longer. If you are being offered the same I would be suspicious about the quality of the tiles.Carl2510 said:What’s people’s opinions on flooring for the kitchen and bathrooms if you had the choice at the same price Vinyl or Tiles?1 -
No, it’s not just you 🙂JGB1955 said:Small hall way. Do you want a blast of cold air into your front room every time the door is opened? Do you want muddy feet/wet dogs/a pile of junk mail in the corner of your room? Not for me, I wouldn’t buy a house with a fully south facing back garden.Carl2510 said:What’s everyone’s view on south facing garden? A must or not
My back garden is NNW facing and the part closest to the house is permanent deep shade, which has been bliss during the recent heatwave - I even have a small patch of grass that stayed green! Much more comfortable to sit on than the dusty brown straw the rest of the lawn turned into. In less extreme weather, if I want to sit in the sun I just sit at the other end of the garden - best of both worlds!
My front garden is SSE facing and I don’t venture out there until the evening as it’s just too hot, so it never looks as tidy as I’d ideally like it to.

We are quite lucky In the fact the girlfriends dad is a plasterer and tiler so we would be getting him to fit the tiles we would just need to buy them.Scotbot said:

i want one but then I think well will I use it a lot, and does that mean I’d have to buy more plates cutlery glasses etc0 -
I agree that we currently have a passageway marked out by the furniture, but the room feels much larger than if that space were walled off. Subjective - very much so!RelievedSheff said:
Having a separate hallway wouldn't really make much difference to most houses with a walk through lounge as the furniture has to be arranged to allow for a "corridor" to walk through anyway. You then also wouldn't have the heat loss from the living space every time the front door is opened.GDB2222 said:
In an ideal world, you want all that, and more. But, the OP is having to make compromises. Does she want a larger living room and a small porch, or a decent sized hall and smaller living room?Davesnave said:In the country, you need a boot/drying room, then utility room, then hallway....and even then grass and wood chips from the chain saw end up in the kitchen!

Posts like this one do really indicate just how subjective houses and property really are and what suits one person really wouldn't suit another.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
For the kitchen, a surface where there's some small chance that things you drop won't shatter.Carl2510 said:What’s people’s opinions on flooring for the kitchen and bathrooms if you had the choice at the same price Vinyl or Tiles?

Is a dishwasher or lack of really going to be a deal breaker?Carl2510 said:

We have one but purely because the kitchen had a space left to install one. If the space wasn't there we probably wouldn't have bothered. It gets used once a week on a Sunday after we have had Sunday dinner. The rest of the time it sits idle, unless we have people stay over.
You need to choose a house for it's location and layout not if it has a dishwasher!!0 -
I’m not basing it off a dishwasher, I just know we will have the option to get one and wondered if there is any point due to there being two of us obviously maybe a family down the line, but right now just can’t see it getting any use.RelievedSheff said:
