Hexham and Alnwick are both lovey towns.0

If you are retiring, I recommend Alnwick. Bus station, shops and supermarkets, Alnwick infirmary, plus the best second hand bookshop in Europe. Alnmouth railway station few miles up the road.£216 saved 24 October 20141

Thank you, Had looked at Alnwick will now look at Hexham too.0

Rent somewhere. Decide where you want to be... THEN buy.0

Don't know where you live at the moment but if it is in the south of England then defiantly rent for at least 12 months to see if you like the area in cold wet weather. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0

Depends if you want the sea or not. If you are future proofing for no longer being able to drive, Alnwick has the most facilities and a short bus ride from the nearest beach at Alnmouth. Nice villages without many amenities near the sea are Longhoughton, Embleton, Beadnell, Lesbury, Hipsburn, Alnmouth (very expensive with high council tax).£216 saved 24 October 20140

Also depends on what your definition of affordable is.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
