Incorrect EON markers on credit report stopping a mortgage

  • I am going through the exact same thing with Eon, I have posted on a separate thread, but I think its important that we all take a stand as the data sharing Eon engage in is wrong and they need to review this as a matter of urgency.
  • I'm having a similar nightmare with Eon. I had an account in 2020 and agreed to a monthly direct debit. When I left Eon I got a final reading bill of £1450, which I assumed was an  glaring error, as it made no sense. I attempted to explain this to customer service  on the phone a few times, but only to be told that this was what I was due. It was in March this year we discovered that the direct debits had never been taken, and that this bill  was retrospectively for the year! Eon acknowledged the error, and offered me a tiny discount (£30) and to wave the late fee. I was told by customer resolutions I could speak to the Ombudsman as I felt that their offer didn't go far enough, and we left it there in late March. early April. After seeking legal advice, I decided to pay the bill in full  at the beginning of May (and took out a loan to do so). Problem resolved, I thought. Last week Experian informed me the Eon were lodging four missed payments against me. I've tried to resolve this, but their data dept. insist that this is fair, even though we didn't discover the mistake until March, and I trusted the complaints resolution team who appeared to be helping me.
My credit report, which has always been 100% good, has now dropped almost 300 points.  My current mortgage deal runs out next year and I need to re-mortgage. Not only did Eon mess up with setting up my direct debit, putting me in a hugely stressful position with a huge bill I hadn't budgeted for, now on top of that, they're choosing to ignore the detail of the situation and have wrecked my credit file which is going to have a  major impact on my mortgage and everything else. I can't understand how any company could operate like this. The alleged four missed payments are a fiction, and it seem so was the advice from the complaints resolution team.  Someone from complaints is writing the date team to lodge a third appeal, but I'm not holding my breath.

Just in case it helps, if you stay with your current lender and simple take one of their retention products this will have no impact on your mortgage as there is no reassessment of affordability/credit check etc.
If you plan to re-mortgage elsewhere then yes this is likely to have an impact.
Not going to comment on how you got to where you are though as it may not be helpful.

Complain about their handling of the complaint and ask for a dead lock letter for the ombudsman.

I have also been victimised by e.on. can we not all collectively sue this rogue trader? i had direct debit with them and they r supposed to review it in case it is not covering my usage. they used to send me latest charges and in email also mention that i do not need to worry as i have direct debit set up with them. then i decided to leave e.on and they sent me huge final bill-i was happy to pay but i noticed that they have used wrong final readings and so i messaged them via online form for which i do not have any evidence. i kept requesting them to fix the bill and they kept asking me my readings which i supplied to them. they never mended by final bill and i phoned them a few times and i told them i was going on holiday in december end for 2 weeks so they should wait till i am back from holiday and that i will pay by january mid. they agreed but this had no effect on them. they kept threatening me without* fixing bill and then started adding fines on top. so i paid wrong bill on january 15th - within the time i requested them to wait for. so in the end also i was victimised as i was forced to pay wrong bill. but now i am looking to remortgage urgently and i saw they have ruined my credit report by WRONGLy adding S for 5 months late payment for october. why? when i had direct debit set with them? and then U for december and then again S for 6 months delay in payment when i settled final bill in january? how can i correct their false information? going by several complaints on internet about e.on, i am not hopeful but this will force me to get a very bad mortgage rate. this is wrong by e.on. please help. thanks,

shal4 - Just reading this today and wondered if you managed to resolve it and how?
  • Thank you for this thread! I am experiencing the same issues that you all are facing. Credit report has always been good and no issues there. Got a mortgage in principle and put in an offer on a house only to sign off on the mortgage and bam, declined. Done a full credit report to find that EON have marked my account wrongly in 2018 and the credit agency is saying this is the reason why I have struggled to get credit over the last 5 years and it has severely negatively impacted me all this time and it is the reason why the mortgage was declined.

Long story short, we rent atm and moved into our current property. There was a different supplier there so I requested a final bill and submitted the final meter reading. We were massively in credit at that point so I was expecting money back. Low and behold, the final bill that came back was through the roof and we ended up owing hundreds of pounds. I went back and forth with them as I had updated my meter readings monthly so could not understand why. In the end after a lot of aggro and me esculating the claim, I settled with them, paid off a chunk and arranged to pay the final fee over a few months. I asked to set up a direct debit, was told no, I had to do a standing order for it to come out on the 1st of the month. That was done, it was coming out each month on the first, no problem. Then I get a text to say I have made no payments and that they would be coming after me for arrears. Back on the phone I went for hours and after a lot of arguements, it was acknowledged that there was a system failure and my payment arrangement had not been logged/failed. They had automatically started the collection process and I quote 'It also meant that we incorrectly shared data on the account with the credit bureaus.'. They went on to say that they had spoken to the data team, advised them of the situation and they confirmed that they had requested to remove the negative shares on my report and it would take up to 21 days.

Apparently, this never happened and because I always did my credit checks yearly with clear score or Experian and it did not show on either of them, I assumed everything had been sorted.

Now, this month I finally have saved a deposit, got the MiP and put in the offer on the house only to have it declined as we went to sign the paperwork. We had a credit report done by CheckMyFile and of the 3 agencies they check, it has only come up on Equifax, not the other two and this is the reason why my mortgage was declined. I can get a much lower mortgage still but I have been warned that they may decline me due to this as well and we are about to loose the house if this is not sorted in a few days. My mortgage broker said to me today that the only thing I can do is get this wiped quickly, find an extra £15k on the deposit to fund the missing gap or take a step back and loose the house.

I don't have an extra £15k and I do not know how long it will take to get this wiped off of my record.

My father who works in the mortgage industry is horrified at it all. The only bonus that I have is that I have all the transcripts and emails as well as an email from the resolution team closing the account and acknowledging the fault on their side and saying they will get this negative report removed (which they never did). He thinks we could get compensation as it has effected my credit score so badly over the last few years (and explains why I have struggled recently to get a new phone contract and why when I went to get a new credit card, the APR/interest rates were so high). My concern right now is not compensation though, I just want to get this off my credit rating and get my house sorted. My kids are in limbo, my husband is beside himself and I feel like it is all my fault. My credit rating is perfectly fine apart from this one issue. I have no loans or CCJ's. I have one card with a very low balance and I pay 4x the minimum payments each month (in fact, it will be paid off again in the next 2 months time). There are literally no blemishes on my credit report apart from EON and it is devastating.

The only relief I have is that I am not the only one who has faced this but the likelihood is that I will now loose my house and the money put in to solicitors etc.
I have emailed the ombudsman, eon, the directors of eon and the resolution team today. I have put in a report to Equifax and I am speaking to CheckMyFile now but I do not think this will be resolved in enough time. I also called EON this morning and the gentleman on the phone said he could not help me, had no number to give to me to speak to someone else, he could not patch me through to anyone else and that the only thing I could do was email and they would get back to me within 5 working days. I also complained that the complaints number on their website is not working and he said I would have to call up and speak to someone else separately about that!. I have not slept or eaten, its my husband's birthday today and I cannot get him out of bed. We need to move urgently as our landlord is selling our house and the rent at a new place is more than what our mortgage would be. To say that I am stressed, anxious and scared is an understatement.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated from anyone who has gone through this. If it was my fault, I would accept it but I cant believe that this is what has caused all the issues I have had over the last 5 years and tbh, it is over £100 that I paid back on time as requested and all because of a fault on their side which they have admitted to, it has caused all of this heartache.

I don't know what to do......

a bit late to the party but anyone in this situation might find its worth talking to a broker.

there are morgage lenders out there who will loan in lots of differnt situations so the broker will likely know someone who doesn't have a problem with the markers.

just make sure its someone independent who looks at the hole market.

Also OP is saying they are using a broker already.

Usually a broker will check all three major credit agencies to avoid problems like yours, not all vendors report to all agencies.

the op started the thread in august 2020 and it looks like they sorted there issue within a couple of weeks (last posting in may 2021).

there have been several other people posting with the same problem since who haven't said they are.

brokers can find lenders who dont use a particular credit agency but they can also find lenders who will lend when there are defaults or late payments (but the rates might be not as good). so they are definately worth at least a conversation.

rather than correct my typing when what i'm saying is clear enough maybe read the actual thread contents?
