Partner desperate to go abroad ...

  • We were due to fly to NYC in September, and have decided not to - it's my partner's favourite place in the whole world, but safety has to come first.

I don't mean to sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but it's the middle of a pandemic and I'd seriously reconsider if it's a good idea.
People in Spain were told they had to quarantine for 2 weeks on return to the UK while already over there - if it's your last week of leave, would this fit in with both of your jobs?

It would have to be taken as unpaid leave. Work are unwilling to change our annual leave hence 3 weeks off in July with nowhere to go.

For all the risks, requirements and "kerfuffle" - great word!) is it worth it?   To me - no.

Risk is incremental. The greater the exposure the greater the risk.

As long as you can put up with social distancing, restrictions on numbers in pools, shops, museums etc and don't mind wearing a mask.
  • We are going to Spain first 10 days of sept.. Hotels we can cancel with refunds up to 3 days before and ferry can be moved If needed. Neither of us have had longer than 3 Days leave in over a year and after working from home the last 5 months the last thing I want is a staycation. We know the risks but keep to ourselves anyway. Travelling by motorbike. Have insurance with specialist company. Feel no more at risk than if we went to the beach in the U.K. for 10 days. Only thing that will swerve it now is a Spanish lockdown. I work from home so quarantine isn’t an issue and partner has another 2 weeks leave when we get back. I know the feeling as I have had 4 holidays cancel this year, and am an avid traveller.

Bear in mind that your travel insurance is unlikely to cover you for anything COVID related.

Personally, I've given up any thought of holidays abroad this year & am prepared to do the same for next year as well.  At the end of the day I value my health more than a bit of sun and beer.
  • I suggest Italy. No special entry requirements, low number of cases, hot weather. I spent 3 weeks in Italy recently and enjoyed it, except the part when I didn't visit some attractions, because I didn't want to wear a mask. But otherwise it was quite pleasant.
Hotels are cheap due to lower number of tourists.

I'm currently in Switzerland but weather here is a bit moody. Mix of rain and hot weather. Masks only required on public transport.

If you google the name of the country plus Coronavirus cases you can see the graph with historical numbers.  Malta seems ok although bit of a spike a couple of days ago, Greece and Italy numbers are also fairly low.

However it’s not just what their numbers look like, it’s also based on ours and if countries are still prepared to accept us if they continue to rise.

If it were me, I wouldn’t book anything until the week before and have a cancellable UK option as back up. A possible exception to that is Jersey - warm enough to count as abroad - but possibly will stay open to the UK because of their ties, but I think they have a mandatory test when you arrive there.
  • I am feeling pretty much the same as your partner and we are still hoping for some sun and sea in 2020.

We have decided that as we can go at the drop of a hat, we will sit it out till September and just book a last-minute getaway to somewhere with low-risk figures. We have always travelled a lot and we miss it so much.
