School run parents was a minor point in my post. How much time do you spend using the roads other than in or on a motor vehicle?
15-30 minutes a day as a pedestrian. Started to do a daily walk during lockdown, kept it up especially given a spinal injury I have and the amount of time I spend sat at work.
Long term respiratory health problems and poor air quality are caused more by having lots of people live in a small space than because of vehicles. Where I live the population density is just 1/60th that of London and is ranked 279th out of 317 for population density of English Districts. Poor air quality is not an issue, neither are long term respiratory problems and during summer our county experiences high levels of traffic due to it being a popular holiday destination.

15-30 minutes walking in a low population density environment for a few months during a pandemic doesn't really reflect most peoples experience of sharing busy roads with fast moving traffic.
You're lucky that you live in an area with good air quality, many people don't, many people suffer respiratory problems caused by or made worse by traffic pollution. Claims that crowded environments cause more problems doesn't negate the problems traffic causes. Traffic pollution not affecting you personally doesn't make it irrelevant.
What you consider high levels of traffic during holiday seasons are probably low compared to cities and vehicles over a given area.

I'm a lorry driver doing over 2000 miles a week in the UK. I'm more than aware of what high levels of traffic are, I've had 25 years of suffering them. I also know what the primary cause is, too many people trying to get into the same place - a valid reason for getting rid of cities if ever there was one. I would hazard a guess I've a wider range of experience of high levels of traffic than your limited local experience is as mine includes many multiple experiences of every one of the worst ones in the UK sufficient enough to act like locals do at things like junctions and sliproads.

Or having half-decent public transport within the cities, and park-and-ride at the edges.

Your experience is of being a motorist. Being outside a vehicle alongside fast moving traffic is very different to being in a vehicle.
I would hazard a guess I've a wider range of experiences of localised pollution than your limited local experience, I've had 30+ years of suffering it.
