DFS Sofa wrong size

I purchased a sofa from DFS just before lockdown, it has now arrived but it is 9cm too large in all directions. This means it is too large to fit in our lounge, it’s meant to be 270cm but actually measures 279cm. I have contacted DFS and they say they have a tolerance of 10% (which means their tolerance would allow it to be up to 297cm instead), I cannot find this stated anywhere on their website or in any T&C’s. If I want to return the sofa I’m being told that it will cost me approx £400 to return it as it within tolerance. They are unable to provide any evidence of this 10% tolerance, can they actually hold me to this?
Ive checked other sofa manufacturers and they all state a tolerance of approx 1% or 3cm.

I'd say it doesn't match the description. Ask them to point out where in your contract their tolerance is stated.

Did you pay for at least some of it by credit card, by any chance?  Or through finance?  If so, that might give you an alternative route if they won't play ball.

In the meantime, do not use the sofa.  Keep it covered as well.  Don't give them a reason to deduct anything because you've stained or damaged it.

You have a legal right to reject the sofa as being not as described. I take it the measurements you relied on are stated online.  Put this in writing to them within 30 days of the delivery and ask for a refund and for them to arrange collection.
As they are asking for £400 for collection I can see you may have a fight on your hands, this is a tactic they tried with me when they delivered damaged sofas and it's a nonsense,
As the above advice you may have to use an alternative route to obtain your refund.

10% tolerance on something so huge...??? They are completely and utterly taking the p*ss!!!

If the dimensions are stated on the website and it does not say a 10% tolerance then reject it under the Consumer Rights Act. They need to collect it at their expense as it is not as described.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

did you did you buy in store?
If you did what is on the website is irrelevant.

I doubt it would be enforceable even if it was stated somewhere in the smallprint. 10% of 270cm isn't quite average bum-width but it's getting close to it - it's an absurdly big margin of error for a sofa.

Thanks. I completely agree, it seems an unacceptably huge tolerance.. The sizes on the website stated “approximate”

I’ve already asked them to show me where their tolerance is stated, it isn’t written anywhere. they say they don’t feel they have to advertise it like all their peers do as they manufacture a “higher quality” product than the others

I'd say you accepted that when you placed the order but I'd question their "higher quality" statement though. Seems if they're willing to accept the return then you'll have to pay for collection. I seem to remember they wanted to charge me up to 20% of the cost of the sofas to return them and that was stated somewhere in their terms and conditions.
