What does your renewal letter say about your NCB?

Surely if they've previously accepted 8 years NCB it will now state that you have 9 years, which will be your proof going forward.
That's the whole basis for her dilemma.  She now knows she really has 1 year NCB, but the renewal from her current insurer says she has 9.  If she wants proof of only 1 year's NCB for a new insurer how does she get this without the current insurer twigging they under charged her?
Does it? She hasn't made that clear, all the OP said was they had an email stating 8 years-no proof, which was presumably a confirmation when she first took out the insurance rather than a proper renewal notice stating she has now 9 years NCB.

Personally I haven't been asked to provide proof of NCB for years, a lot of insurers seem to have moved to the model of requesting proof only when there's been an accident claim.

I'm with Hastings since last December, Even though I have 12+ Years they have wrote saying no proof, Seems alot of them don't want any proof until something happens, I would say continue without telling them and when you insure with the new one tell them you have one year, if it worries you that much end your current one now and go with a new one.

    No Dilemma
There is no obligation to use the NO Claims bonus if you dont want to.
( She might be wanting to use it on a second  car next week that is more expensive to insure)
She just needs to state zero as she does not wish to apply   NCB to this policy and no one will be any the wiser
One could argue that her old insurers are not out of pocket as they have trousered the premium with no claim
Her new insurers will be in pocket and the situation has been regularised with them

There is no set rules for NCB when it comes to insurance and if you have a letter saying 8 years then you now have 8 years and have proof of that so just say that when you take out the new insurance.
When i was with Admiral a while ago they did a 10 month policy and then gave 1 years NCB at the end of each 10 months, i did this for several years and then moved to another insurer i stated how many years they had given me and it was accepted without issue.

If you want to be safe and not worry, the best thing to do would be to phone your current insurer and cancel your policy without giving a reason. If they insist on giving a reason, just say you've sold the car and won't be buying a new one for a while. Then they have to cancel the policy, you can't have a policy with no car. They won't offer you a refund.

Then take out a new policy with 0 years NCB.

Some insurers share information on NCB automatically, that's why they don't often ask for proof anymore. Looks like you were very lucky.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

This is great advice if the OP does not have a claim. If she does try and make a large claim the insurers may well go through everything with a fine tooth comb, and may well discover the true situation as no one knows if these details are lying unchecked on a computer somewhere
She made a mistake last year, but this time it would be deliberate deception and there is no way I would even consider doing this
If I were her I would go for 0 years NCB

( I have a friend who had a classic car policy that did not accrue NCB. When he transfered to a non classic car  he  asked the insurers to confirm that he had been insured with them for 5 years and had not made a claim in that time. He then passed the letter on to his new insurers who duly awarded the 5 years. I always wondered if he was guilty of deception )

No as he asked the question honestly:  he didn't ask them to give a non existent No claims discount accrual.
  • My wife had been driving my car for 2 years, when we purchased her a car, I asked my insurance company if they would give her 2 years NCD for the new car. They said just wait while we check & gave her the same NCD as myself, 8 years!
Actually last year when I checked our 2 cars, she had more NCD than me! The whole NCD thing is just crackers!

Hello all! Just an update, I did contact my old insurance provider which was sure thing - now known as policy expert and explained my situation and they was extremely helpful! Happily sent me a new email stating my 1 year no claims bonus and corrected the situation, as my insurance with them was just about to finish they was happy to do this for me and it wasn’t a problem, I am now with my new insurance provider and have the correct 1 year no claims! 😁
  • Hi took out a new insurance policy 2 months ago, but I never knew you couldn’t use no claims on two vehicles at the same time, my other policy is due to run out December however the car is still in use, my new insurance company have asked for proof of my no claims and pictures of the log book and of my licence.

i have replied to the company saying that it was a honest mistake as I was informed by a family member that I could have two cars on the same no claims.

do you think my insurance will cancel me or just adopt the quote to 0 years no claims rather than 2 years
