No claims bonus mistake

Hi everyone I’m just looking for a bit of advice please, so I was a named driver on my mums insurance for around 8 years, I purchased my own car last summer and took out insurance in my own name when doing this I added that I had 8 years no claims bonus (fully believing this was the truth) I’ve come to renew my insurance for this year with a different company and I’ve realised I should never of added the no claims bonus as I was only a named driver and not the main driver so it doesn’t count. They never asked for proof but now I don’t know what to tell my new insurer, do I just say I have 0 years no claims bonus when Taking out new insurance? Do I contact my current insurance company which is due to finish out next week And let them know I made a mistake? I’m very panicked as this was a genuine mistake on my part. Thanks

Have last year's insurer provided you with paperwork saying "9yrs"?

They clearly dropped one in not checking... It's down to how lucky you feel in that continuing. USUALLY, nobody looks further than the previous renewal for proof.

Hi Aiden, yes I’ve had an email from them stating 8 years no claims discount but it does say next to that “proof - no” I am happy to say I have 0 years no claims When sorting my new insurance I’m just wondering if this will cause an issue for me as I’ve stated I had 8 years with my current insurance company

No, it won't cause you an issue that way round - you could have used that NCB on another car.

You can freely buy new insurance with 0 ncb, for example if you bought another car in addition to the one you have now.  Buying new insurance isn't the problem, but you haven't said if the insurance with the mistaken 8yrs ncb is still running. If it is that may be the problem.

Thanks for your replies, my current insurance is due to end, so I have a quote with another car insurance company, I’ve gained 1 years no claim but unfortunately my renewal email says I have gained 8 due to the mistake I made last year when taking the insurance out, so if the new company want proof of the one year no claim this will be difficult to provide 🙁 I don’t know if I am best to just say I have 0, but I didn’t want this to cause an issue if my new insurer could see I put down I had 8 on my last policy

You can say to them you only want to use 1 year when buying a new one or explain that they made a typo and its 1 not 8 youve accured.

What actual difference is 1 year, 8 years or no NCB actually making to quotes?

The more NCB the cheaper it will be.

Yes, I know that.  What I meant was, specifically for the OP, what exactly difference does it make in absolute terms pounds, shillings and pence?  It is quick and easy to find out using a comparison site.

Hi I’m not worried about my new insurance quote being more expensive, I’m just worried for the fact I have made a genuine mistake thinking I have racked up 8 years no claims not realising it is only the policy holder who gains these and not me (the named driver) this was my first years insurance on my own car holding a policy in my own name. My new insurance provider will need proof of my no claims and it states 8 years which isn’t correct due to a error on my part, my insurance company never asked for my no claims proof or I would have noticed this mistake when I first took the insurance out, I’ve only now noticed when I received my no claims email and applying for new insurance
