Surely the ones that were furloughed have had to use the holiday to so they won't be having it at Christmas either.
No thats the whole point. They haven't had to touch their annual leave. They basically been given 3 weeks off for free on full pay. 80% paid by the government, so the company were saving money and taking full advantage of it.
Don't they have to take holiday in August to?

Well the ones furloughed approached the boss about their concerns even before they started their furlough term, asking will they be first to be made redundant, and the reply was basically dont worry
What else do you think any Manager would have said?  "Yep, all the useless ones are being furloughed, hopefully they'll leave and not cost us anything?"
No it isnt as corporate as that, the relationship between boss and staff is good. I'd be surprised if the boss would lie to paint over any cracks.

If the relationship is good, and your husband is so bothered about it, why doesn't he ask for the logic behind the decisions?

Well hubby said ironically the ones that now have to take enforced holidays in August actually only had enough annual leave left to cover already booked Christmas holidays. By holidays I mean time off not actual going away holidays. So you can start to see why hubby and a lot of other staff feel a bit cheated really. The company is far from being in trouble. They have been busy all throughout lockdown. It was very much business as usual. But the union told everyone that the company has just taken advantage of the furlough scheme. It didnt really need it to be blunt.

Well I'd have thought that was obvious. The company basically took full advantage of furlough, which enabled them to give some staff time off for free or loss to them.
What hubby is saying and half the work force, it seems a trifle unfair how they handled dishing out the furlough, but then to add salt to the already sore wound, the ones bitter have now had to cancel Christmas off to take time off in August.
How are they meant to feel?

If they were just taking advantage of the scheme they would have done it for far more then 3 weeks. They would have been rotating staff in and out of it. Which quite a lot of companies probably have done. Just to save some money even if they had no intention of getting rid of the staff.

    You haven't answered my question.
If your husband had been furloughed while others were still at work, would you have then been complaining bitterly about injustice?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

To be honest, I just asked hubby that question, he said yes it would have been the same the other way round, and colleagues would probably have been jealous and cold towards him. But he isnt really jealous, hes just thinking outside the box and sees it as an injustice.

What is clearly not obvious to you or your husband is why they picked some people for furlough and not others. As I said, if he wants to know, and the relationship is good, ask them for the logic.

If that were the case no employees would have been furloughed. As there would have been work to do.  Always comes as a shock when the true state of Company finances becomes known.
