Car MOT

We’ve just bought a 57(2008) fiesta 1.4tdci mot due Feb, had it 24hrs and it’s acting up coughing and spluttering, didn’t see anything to do with MOT before we bought other than it had a current one, now I’ve looked at the paper work we were given afterwards there was an advisory of injector seal blowing repair replace if needed, should this be done under warranty?
This is a very common issue on the 1.4 TDCi engines. If bought from a garage they should be fixing it.
  • I assume you purchased from a trader and not private sale?
Have you reported your concerns to the vendor?
Have you verified the cause of the coughing & spluttering?  Is it linked to the injector seal advisory from the MOT or something else?
The consumer rules around used cars are more in favour of the purchaser than the dealer now, around rejecting a car or repair if the fault was present or developing at the time of purchase.  These do take into account the age of the vehicle to some extent.
The first thing to do is quickly raise your concerns with the vendor as time limits apply.
Yes it is from a local trader, we reported it the day after we picked it up(Friday), I’ve been in touch via messenger so I have a copy of what has been said, to be fair he’s been spot on so far I took it back to him today and he or the garage he uses are looking at it and so far all I know is they say they suspect an injector has gone down, not sure how long I should give him to repair it, I’ll probably call him tomorrow just to asses the situation. My next question is once it’s been repaired would it invalidate my warranty to have it serviced at a proper dealer? So the can give it a once over, there were also advisory’s on the brake pipes so I’d like to get them sorted as it’s my daughters car.

It sounds like the vendor is being fair and honouring the liabilities they have :)
I am not sure what you mean by "serviced at a proper dealer"?  If you have maintenance work undertaken by a VAT-registered garage it should not invalidate your warranty.  The brakes may not need doing straight away if they were only advisories - on a 12 year old car you cannot expect everything to be perfect (though brakes are, of course, important and not an area to skimp).

Our Mercedes S class was end of April we got it done 30 days earlier. The cars only covered about 7k miles and full mercedes service history. We rarely use the car as we prefer the Range Rover and at the times the 911 but a full service by the main dealer and mot days or weeks before it is dues is always a must to esnure our cae is safe as it can be for us and others on the road.

Re the garage OP used, they did not have to tell you as it was not a mandatory extension but an allowance if you could not get the car mot'd.

It won't be good for the car doing so few miles in over 3 years (which it must be if needed MOT).

Not yet... but anything with lots of moving parts won't like being sat still for long-ish periods of time.
My most troublesome car was also the one with the lowest mileage; it was a 'potter to the shops on Sunday' car for the previous owner :)

That can happen to any car and bottom line is we have an extended warranty via MB. If the car did break down, we have our other cars and MB will send out a MB service van to look at it, if not sorted take it back and offer us another car similar to what we have usally a new-sih car if we wanted it for the duration. We will sell, px her next year for the new GLS as the Range Rover is the one that needs careful attention.  Thanks for your concerns but even if the auto box failed, its all covered, if the engine blew up its, covered if the pan roof stopped working its covered. Thanks. Btw, I don't recall our cars ever breaking down other than something being pointed out at service EG brakes may need changing in x miles but that is it. But thanks again and it is nice to have a newer car as they are more reliable but an MOT every 6 months would be better
