                    Hello.
My car was due for an MOT on 25 July. I took it to the garage and they did it but didn't inform me I could have got an extension. I didn't know that was an option. It only needed minor work for emissions. Is there anything I can do? Upset that as a regular customer we were not told.
Thanks

Bit late now if the MOT is already done. Personally, regardless of the extension, i would rather get mine done.sjljd said:Hello.

Tbh I would rather know i have a safe car then get a free 6 months. You could have had an easy fix problem that got considerably worse over the next 6 months. For the sake of 40 odd quid1

From the 1st August the extensions stop and yours wasn’t that far away from then in all fairness. Both mine and the husbands were due in April and we still chose to have them done because for us it wasn’t worth the risk of driving a potentially unsafe vehicle around for the additional 6 months. Given that my husbands car needed quiet a bit doing it was the right decision.
In answer to your question no there isn’t anything you can do about it.0

ThanksBe thankful you got the problems done before they cost more. Hope you had a service as well as mot really does not check much for the cars upkeep.0

I knew about the extension but still got it done on time because I'm still using the car.
I'd also point out that while the MOT was extended 6 months, you were still required to make sure the car was road legal. If your car wasn't meeting the emissions standards then it would've failed a roadside roadworthiness test anyway and could have cost you a lot more than half the price of an MOT
It is the drivers/keepers liability to ensure they keep abreast of any changes in law.

The advice is to get the MOT done as soon as possible even if you have/would get an extension.sjljd said:Is there anything I can do? Upset that as a regular customer we were not told.

I was delighted with this change. My MOT was due in June and my annual car service is in November. Now I will be able to get them both done at the same time.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I have my MOT & service 6 months apart by design - so it gives me a heads up if work is likely to need done before it's MOT.silvercar said:I was delighted with this change. My MOT was due in June and my annual car service is in November. Now I will be able to get them both done at the same time.
As a result, I haven't had a car fail an MOT in around 6-7 years. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

I actually understand the benefit of taking the MOT extension. Mine was booked for 30th march, but I did SORN at the beginning of lockdown. It makes sense to get service and MOT when I go back on the road as then everything will be good to go. Also help my cashflow as I am expecting a largish bill when the service is done.0

Weren't extensions because of the difficulty of getting MOT's done because of the circumstances created by the lockdown, for either the owner or the testing stations? In which case if you had no problem arranging it, an extension was irrelevant.0
