I would say a 155 x 70 x 17 would drive horrid.

Unless your asking 225 x 50 vs 255 x 70...
In which case the 255 x 70 will have a side wall height of 178mm against the 225 x 50 which would be 112mm, but the diameter of the wheel and tyre will be 790mm instead of 658mm so may not fit or may rub.0 -

There's the absolute height of the sidewall - both your examples are about the same.
Then there's the construction of the sidewall - the 50 profile tyre is a very different shape to the 70, so will almost certainly be stiffer. In addition, the 225/50 will be higher load and speed rated than a 155/70, so would be stiffer for that, too.0 -
