At my parents house we had two cats-brother and sister, i left home and got a rescue cat...ended up going 'home' (long story) and took the rescue cat with me. The rescue cat didnt like my other two, and for several years we had to keep them all seperated as Thomas had several fights with Ollie...Thomas ended up at the vets after she ripped his claw out ouch!

So introducing a new kitten may not work, but you never know with cats. Some just keep out of the way, others go looking for a fight!

Now i have two cats with my OH, i wouldn't have more. Two is enough for me.

    Thanks for all the replies.....

We have now discovered that Mario (male) would be absolutely fine with another cat in the house but Luigi (female) wouldn't............

So looks like we may have to leave it.....

  • Hi,

I have 3 cats. All rescues and moggies.

2 were adopted by DH and I from our local RSPCA centre, they were in the same run together - we were looking for 2. They actually chose us by jumping all over us.

The 3rd cat my mum adopted so it came with her when her and dad moved in with us. They moved out this time last year but as all 3 cats have such a good bond she can't bear to take hers away.

We also have a rescued greyhound who is fine with cats.

Unfortunately I'm having to feed them naughty food (Bakers and Go Cat :o) as I'm on maternity leave and the budget is tight - I will be putting them back on Burns as soon as I get my first full wage.

Currently we have one very highly strung and neurotic tortie female moggie but in the past we have had 5 at most and 8 all together over the years.
We never really had any problems with fights as the persian was too stupid to care, the ginger farm cat was too old to be bothered, the tortie was too concerned about herself and the little black and white was very shy so it was quite harmonious. Until we took in a semi-feral who despised the black and white so much we had to keep them apart permanently.
I do sometimes wish we could have more cats but our current one tends to have 'dirty protests' if another cat comes in the house. We tried to introduce our friends cat so we could look after her when my friend was away but it didn't work at all :(
  • We have four cats (soon to be 5!), two moggies, a Maine Coon, and a Burmilla, aged 6, 5, 2, and 18 months.

Our new addition will be arriving in January and is a red maine coon boy, can't wait!

Scotsgirl: I feed our Maine Coon girl on Royal Canin 31 (the MC one) as the biscuits are bigger and it slows her eating down! She has to chew them rather than inhaling them although she's always on the prowl for anything else (including flies which she catches with one paw). Its supposed to be for cats of 1 year and up, so you've a while to go yet!
  • Hi
Update we now have 7 cats and 8 kittens my Ragdoll has had her litter too. She doesn't have much milk so my Maine Coon is feeding all 8 largely - she is a great mum.
Scotsgirl asked about Maine Coon food. I feed Royal Canin sensible as she has a delicate stomach. Another breeder friend of mine switches them onto this from kitten at about 3 months as she thinks if they grow too fast they are more at risk of hip dysplasia.
As mungamink says Royal Canin also do a breed specific food for Maine Coons which has differently shaped kibble which slows down how quickly they eat and has glucosamine and chronditin to help maintain joints.

We have 2, Elvis and Sparky! We love them.
Mind you, just spent £40 on a 'Happy Cat' pheromone diffuser, as Sparky was over-grooming and vet says he is stressed! (I'll give him stressed grrrr.....), seriously, he is just over a year old, and his mother was a wild cat, heavily pregnant, found on a farm, so am sure he has wild tendancies.
    keep smiling,
