I have an old (2009) Dell 545 desktop which is getting very slow and hard drive is dying. I thought I could replace the HDD with SSD but apparently as per dell website, I cannot. The configuration is-
1.Running win 10 (win 7 upgraded)
2. Dual core processor
3. HDD cap 320 GB (has been replaced once about 5-6 years ago )
4. RAM of 3 (3 1GB sticks)
I use it for simple tasks like, emails, browsing, printing or downloading simple stuff. I do not play games on it. I have a new laptop which is AMD ryzen 5.
What are my options on the cheap for this desktop?
Shall I install a new HDD and upgrade memory? Is it worth it?
Or should I buy a cheap refurbished Win desktop with i5 and SSD.
Here is the full configuration:

No issue with fitting an SSD. Though with the CPU, I would run a clean install of the operating system, as opposed to cloning anything unnecessary.
Can guide you through it if necessary1 -
Thanks.
I have run the CPU-Z to see what motherboard if have got.MotherboardModel: Dell 0N826NSocket: Socket 775 LGANorth BridgeIntel P35/G33/G31 rev A2South BridgeIntel 82801IR (ICH9R) rev 02BIOSDell Inc. A12 (11/17/2009)
The online searches show that it does not have a slot for SSD and the motherboard may not be able to support SSD.I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T0 -
Dell 0N826N has 4 SATA II connectors, this is what the SSD plugs into via a cable.

I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude, 8gb ram, 360gb ssd, i5 processor. It is an absolute donkey. I've speeded it up slightly by going into settings and changing the power settings to full blast out of the 3 options. There's a few good Youtube videos on how to speed up crap Dells.
I know Domestos kills 99% of germs, but I'm worried about the 1% that got away.1 -
Hi Askeym
I have a Dell Latittude 6420 i5 with a 500 gb Samsung ssd which is dual booted with Win 7 and Linux mint and it is fast on both O/S's. the SSD made a big difference."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0 -
Dell 530 E4500 2.2GHz SSD 8GB runs fine
Worth the £20-£25 forthe SSD to give it a go, maybe try and find some cheap memory1 -
Thank you everyone. Will give it a try. Now will have to choose which SSD would be compatible with my device. Would this one be suitable?

Thank you very much all of you. I will open up my pc and look in what space is available. I think I will have to take the hdd out and put the ssd in its place. I will backup all my data first obviously and then have to do a clean install of win10 from the recovery disk, I had created earlier. Is it the right way to do. I haven't done it before.
