Barclays App and paying in cheques

Anyone else have problems with Barclays App when paying in cheques? I can not get the app to recognise the cheque and take a photo of it. I'm using a dark background as suggested - the green rectangle flashes around (or not) but the app refuses to take the picture. First time I tried it took around 20mins to get a photo, second time was better but yesterday when trying to pay in a cheque I spent about 30 mins holding my phone over the cheque before I gave up. I've tried different backgrounds and different lighting but just could not get it to recognise the cheque and take a photo of it.
Any clues, or is it the same for everyone?

Had the same issue for weeks. It can't even recognise a Barclays issued cheque.
Same as you, tried multiple different backgrounds and different lighting, but nothing seemed to work.
Ended up phoning them and asking for cheque deposit envelops so I can pay in at the local Post Office.

Guess it must depend on your device? I've paid in two cheques over the last month or so, using an iPad, with no problems.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Yeah I've had problems - not so much refusing the take the photo as getting an error code each time.
Instead I just paid the same cheque into my Lloyds bank a/c via their app and then transferred the money back to Barclays......
  • I had the same issue, and after a bit of playing around I found that holding the phone with the cheque covering the whole image rather than just in the white rectangle worked much better.
  • I use this feature regularly through my iPhone and never had any issue at all.

as a side note, I keep the physical cheques for few months as a back up, before destroying them.

Make sure you enter a reference more than 8 digits that should avoid the error code
  • I have used the app for some time without issue.  Using a black background seems to work well.  However this week the app seems to stop and freezes when trying to load the camera so cant take a photo.  my daughter and my wife have the same problem on their phones, so looks like Barclays may have an issue with their app.
  • Trying to pay in a cheque using the Android app is abysmal, even using a high-end smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra) in December 2023.

I followed the instructions perfectly (dark background, no creases on cheque etc) and the corners around the cheque never go green, in order to progress to the next stage. The cheque itself is perfect (no ink issues etc).

I had the same issue many years ago. It's a shame this broken part of the app has not been fixed after all this time.
  • Yeah. The Barclays App has been useless on this feature for many years now. It used to work well, but now it's totally rubbish.  My work around is to pay into my HSBC account where this feature is faultless, then transfer it to my Barclays account a couple of days later.
