@Bargainhunter30 No, I haven't heard of that. I should really sign up for Universal Credit. My income support was stopped a few months ago so I get child benefit and child tax credit (about £200 per week). I just can't do without any income while the Universal Credit is started off, so dare not apply. If my youngest son ever gets his education sorted out by the County Council (19 months and waiting...), I shall be able to go back to work.
  • They can offer you a loan to cover the period without benefits coming in so you don't go without and I found UC works out more for us than child tax credit. The savings account may still be available to you, just google help to save x

Unfortunately, it's not available to me until/unless I swap to Universal Credit. The same applies to the Budgeting Loan. I've had that a couple of times over the years, but it no longer applies to those on Tax Credits.

I’m going to have to dip into my savings as the shower, after several years working well under layers of duct tape, is no longer really attached to the wall. I’m looking at various replacements on EBay but it’s one thing I’m not happy to remove and refit myself.
And the car (16 years old) has an MOT extension until December but it’s got a humming wheel bearing noise so I think that needs repairing sooner than that and I’ll have it MOTd at the same time - if they deem it to be within economic repair.
All rather disappointing. I don’t think I’ll make my target of £30,000 by the end of the year.
My older son was made redundant on Sunday (after months on furlough) so he will also possibly need more money from me.

My shower is so old that Mira couldn’t help (they still have a few of the front plates, but not the back of the case). Nothing on EBay but then remembered FB marketplace - which I’ve never used - and a very helpful man sold me his unused shower for £60 and he posted it today!
My older son’s friend’s dad will fit it next week. I don’t know what he’ll charge but he’s been out 3 or 4 times before and has been reasonable.

I took the the car to the garage. It’s 2 villages away and they’ve always been helpful too. They said not to MOT it but to make the most of the extension. The wheel bearing can wait. Sadly, the broken coil spring can’t wait so they’ll be replacing that shortly. In 27 years of driving, I’d never broken one, then this is the second I’ve broken this year. The Shropshire roads are absolutely appalling.

So all rather expensive, but could be worse.

£380 for my car insurance today (the joys of having 2 learner drivers added!)
£35 cash back with Quidco and I entered their prize draw where you have to send in a screenshot of their quotes and the quotes of a second comparison website.
